Update from VSC

I sent my N-400 application on 10/02/07, it was received next day. I haven't got any receipt letter yet. I lost some mails recently and I'm worried if I missed the receipt or finger print notice.

Do you think they mailed receipt notice for cases after 10/02/07? What is the 1-800 number to call for an update?

My check was cashed on 11/26/07, there is a number written on the check starting with ESC, but it's only a 7 digit number. I could not used this to check the status online since the system says I need a 13 digit number.

Thanks
fizk

Hi,

You should use the number of the fromnt of the check.

It should read....ESC*123456789

If need be, put leading zeros before the numbers..ie: ESC*003456789

good luck

;)

Contact USCIS at 1-800-375-5283 and explain to them that you had your check cashed, but didn't have the reference number and wanted to check on status of case.
Note: The online update system is not reliable so don't be surprised if it doesn't show your case.

Thanks for the number. I called USCIS , surprisingly he was very nice(he had an accent). He said USCIS is not mailing receipt notice, I will be getting finger print notice and I'm not scheduled yet.

I'm confused. How could they not send receipt notice? He gave the ESC number, but it didn't work on the web site. When I asked him he said I cannot use it to check the status online, its for reference only.

I'm more confused now :( Should I call again tomorrow and hope the the next agent would give me more info?

There are 2 numbers on your check, one in back and one in front. The one in back is a reference for check cashing purposes, whereas the one in front (if it's there) is your case reference number. The online system is not up to date , so you won't necessarily be able to see your case status online. I don't know why they would tell you they are not sending out receipt notice, so you may want to call and get clarification from USICS on that.

The number he gave me matches the number on the front of check starting with ECS, except it has some leading zeros.

I'm still confused why I did not get receipt notice!!! Address is correct, I verified it.

Call USCIS back to get clarification as to why you weren't sent a receipt notice.

Someone should do something about these poorly trained contractors. This is unbelievable!

Okay, as Bobsmyth said, your receipt or case number will be the one written on the front of your check. Please add zeros in front of the number until you have a total of 13 digits (including the service center code). For example, ESC*1234567 would turn into ESC*001234567. The online case status will show up AFTER they have printed and mailed out your notice of action. This is what has been happening to most of us at VSC.

Please call back and insist you speak to an Immigration Officer at VSC - regardless of whether the person is nice or not. Niceness does not substitute for incompetence!

Good luck.

I called again, this time the agent said nothing has been mailed yet. I guess I will wait for the receipt notice.

One thing for sure, they have outsourced the USIC immigration customer service. First the customer service rep (in US) takes all the information and transfered me to the so called "immigration officer", and these immigration officers are located in India or another part of the world.

What makes you conclude that they are outsourced in another country? Just from their accent alone?

Just my guess. Both times I called, the agent I spoke to and the background noise (reminds me of Dell customer service) tells me that they have outsourced it. I don't see the problem though, they can only tell the current status, check address, verify information etc. I guess if my case was more complicated (such as RMA) the first rep would have transfered me to real immigration officer.

Next time you call them, ask them where they are located for curiosity. The last time I called they said they were in California.

This reminds me of a time when I called customer service for one of my credit cards, and a rep with a very thick middle-eastern accent introduced himself as Brian Smith. :)

On a serious note, I'm sure that even the lowest level customer service reps for the USCIS have to have security clearance from the government, which leads me to believe that they would have to be U.S. citizens.

That's correct. I used to work at a helpdesk and all the employees on government accounts required security clearance , let alone be US citizens, even the contractors.
The only accounts that were outsourced were commercial accounts, as noticed during my assignment to Hyderabad India last year.
