have applied and am waiting for finger printing end of this month...need to travel urgently in between this whole process (for about 6-8 weeks)...who can advise if its a good idea or not.

i'm thinking of leaving immediately after test/interview and then be back for the oath.

any idea how much further we can postpone the oath date (from original)

thanks

Yes you can travel, you will need to take any relevant paperwork with you if your green card has expired (I have just had this conversation with an officer at the USCIS office) if your green card is still current then there are no travel problems. Re scheduling is okay as long as the rescheduling is done before the scheduled appointments take place.
The USCIS was really helpful on the phone with no long waiting time :)

Technically, you are allowed to travel abroad using your green card up until the actual oath.
There are several possible drawbacks with postponing the oath. First, you will have no control over when the rescheduled oath date would be - you would just be put back in the end of the queue, which may easily mean a delay of extra 2-3 months.
Second, the continuous residency requirement has a "rolling window" and you are supposed to satisfy this requirement at the time you submit N-400, at the time of the interview and at the time of the oath. If you spend too much time abroad after submitting N-400 and before oath, this may cause a problem with the oath itself and your case may be denied or delayed then even if it is recommended for approval at the interview. That is why at the oath the USCIS officers ask for info about all trips abroad after the interview and before the oath. This problem may be exacerbated if you reschedule your oath (because the period between the interview and the oath then gets longer) and if, as you say in your post, you plan to go abroad right after the interview. The longer you stay abroad after the interview and before the oath, the greater the likelihood that this may cause a problem at the oath itself.

As long as you have someone checking your mail while you are away (not mail forwarding), you'd be able to reschedule oath with no problems. Otherwise you risk not receiving the oath letter altogether while you are away. Just be aware that delaying the oath will cause it to be rescheduled for an unknown time in the future.
