my citizenship interview experience

I applied for citizenship along with my son and my husband. Even though we applied for greencard, got fingerprinting and everything done along with my family, however, my greencard was 6 months later than my son and my husband.

Now when citizenship time came for my son and my husband, I filed the citizenship application for myself as well. On the N-400 application i did not check mark that I have had green card for 5 years. I check marked "Other" and stated reasons that my greencard got delayed because somewhere in files my first and last name got swapped. I attached papers to support my reason.

Few weeks later my Citizenship fee got deducted from my bank account, then few weeks later I got my biometrics done and then got my interview letter. All this my son and husband got as well.

Now today at the interview...I passed the test I signed the required documents however at the last minute the officer said oh...i can not sign this before 5 years. He said I dont know why they took your application in the first place. He put my citizenship application "in continuation" status and said I will be informed of their decision in a few weeks by mail.

I do not know whether USCIS messed up by accepting my application in the first place or ...now that they did...what will the letter say? will it tell me to come back to their office when it is 4 years and 9 months? will I have to start from scratch and file for N-400 again?

Has something like this happened to anyone?

any thoughts?

You must have applied to early, and yes, they did make a mistake by letting it pass until the last minute. But, they might be nice to you and just wait to approve you instead of rejecting the application outright, but I don't know.
 
You applied too early. It doesn't matter if USCIS messed up and delayed your green card; that still doesn't exempt you from waiting 5 years minus 90 days to apply. They're going to deny your case once it gets reviewed.

Normally it would have been rejected up front and they would have returned the check. But because you selected "other", the staff doing the initial sorting decided to let it be worked out in the interview instead of rejecting up front.
 
But do let us know if you get anything but a denial (i.e. they tell you to come back for an interview once you're eligible) as I'm sure that would be helpful to a lot of people whose own GC applications was delayed due to name check issues.

When did you acquire your Greencard? I need the date on the card itself, because people are usually crazy when it comes to applying for US citizenship. If you applied earlier than eligible, I concur with other views here, expect a denial letter to be delivered by a 14 ft Uhaul van, with the Jonah Brothers in the backs singing their new hit song"Apply when you are eligible" lol!!!
 
I remmeber the GC thru asylum can have 1 year credit. Did you already take that into account for too early application?

There are others for check "Other" box and got their application returned rigth way being asked "Please specify laws for this "Other".

It is typicall for those who applied up to 90 days before 5 th year of GC. They think they have not been PR for 5 years so they
checked "Other".
 
I did put OTHER as well since I applied in under the 4 years 9 months rule and my interview date will be 3 days before my 5 years anniversary. I am nervous about it now.

During the interview request to change from "Other" to "5 years". In your case, you have nothing to worry on this because
your check has alreayd been cashed and interview have been scheduled. But don't forget to request that change
 
that is really not good to hear. my 4 yr 9 month is in this july. So will I have to reapply from scratch. will there be complications then? will they give me any credit whatsoever? credit i dont mean money but credit by 'time' since my background check, fingerprinting ...everything got done
 
No, everything will be redone from scratch when you reapply.

And it's not 4 years and 9 months, it is 5 years minus 90 days which is a few days more than 4 years 9 months. They will reject people for applying even one day too early, so be careful about that.

New application, new background checks. However, most background checks are being completed in days and weeks instead of months and years, so they should all be completed within 90 days.
