Missing passport: is it needed?

How important is it to bring a passport to the interview? Dh's Israeli passport is missing, somewhere in the house, but I don't anticipate it'll be found any time soon. He has not traveled outside of the US since coming here in 2001.

Any advice would be appreciated.

The IO will ask for passport at interview for identification and travel history purposes. If you lost it, you can file police report and bring it to interview as evidence it was lost.

It depends on situation. It is better to file complaint to police about the passport loss. I too had same issue during my interview. I am able to trace my passport later.

If an Israeli passport is lost, it should be reported to the Israeli consulate in case it is found and used fraudulently. That is for YOUR protection against identity theft.

If there has been no travel, USCS can confirm through a computer search on your bio data and they probably have your PP # in your file already. .

Did he report it to the Israeli US Consulate? If not, then he will have problems in the near future. Does he have a new passport?

No, we did not report the passport as lost to either the police or Israeli consulate. It's somewhere in the house, not lost on the streets; 10 years, moves, and six kids later; we just haven't been able to locate it amongst all the things.

I'm finding the replies to this thread puzzling. OP stated the passport has been misplaced at home. If this is the belief, it would be absurd to report the missing passport to the police, Israeli Consulate, etc.

I understood the OP's intention in asking the question was purely to ascertain whether or not it's really worth bothering to search the house to find the darned passport, in order to bring it to the interview. (Some of the responders, above, may not appreciate that no everyone has an orderly home where they can easily put their hands on any item.)

Personally, I came to the US from Canada. I went to my interview with my last three Canadian passports. The IO didn't ask me for a passport. So from my experience they don't invariably ask for a passport. However, I don't think it would be wise to generalize from my experience alone. Perhaps my experience is unusual. Also, Canada would be seen as a particularly safe-and-boring country of origin, I suspect. USCIS might be a little more relaxed in examining Canadians than some other nationalities.
