Left with nothing

Hi Guys - first time poster here.

In 1999 I moved to the US on an IR1 visa with my wife, 3 years later she left me to go back with her ex and I had absolutley nothing. She was from a very wealthy family and pretty much had all her bases covered financially. I was 5000 miles from home and pennyless. Approx 8 months after this I lost my job, and things have been pretty dire since.

Only recently did I remember about the affidavit of support that went along with my visa application.

I know that approaching her father (the sponsor) directly will do no good at all, but is there any way this can be enforced to provide some kind of financial assistance?

Thanks in advance of any help!

The affidavit of support gives the government the right to go after the sponsor if you end up taking welfare-type benefits; it doesn't give you the right to demand anything from her or the co-sponsor directly.

But you may be able to get some money or assets from her in divorce court, or arranging an out-of-court settlement with the help of lawyers. You need to act fast though; at this very moment she probably is moving around marital assets to shield them from you. If you already divorced long ago, it's too late to get anything now.

Note that she was the sponsor, not her father. Her father was the co-sponsor.

You want to approach your ex-father-in-law to help you financially? Or you want to retrieve funds that were yours that his daughter took off with?
