I just came back from my home country.I went to visit my dad who had a severe stroke. My trip was swift except on my way back in London gartwick airport, the immigration officer bothered me about the temporary card,i was able to educate him what my status is.However when i reached DFW airport,as i expected I was asked the purpose of my trip to my home country.I was cleared by the US immigration after i satisfied them the purpose of my trip.

Sessanga: Are you still an asylee? Or a PR now? Did you travel back to your home country with your national passport?? Welcome back...

Thank you Sessanga Charlesa for posting this message.

This confirms our suspicions that Immigration Officers (and CIS) do keep track of asylees who return back to the country they claimed asylum against. I recall that you got your GC, so this even applies to PR's who's status was derived from asylum.

The only reason you were cleared is because you had a legitimate emergency to attend to (i.e. your father's stroke/illness). I am glad that you got cleared. It is apparent that aside from emergencies - traveling back to one's home country raises a red flag with immigration.

I hope your father's situation is better and wish him the best of health.

Thanks,It`s true that it is questionable if you go back to your home country if you became a PR thru asylum the only exceptions are if you have an emergency or if the political situations in your country have changed but you must have feasible proof i.e if an amnesty has been issued or if the gov`t that persecuted you has changed.

Did you show IO any documents showing the illness of your father? or they just took your word for it.
I wish your father a speedy recovery.
Thanks

u said u were approved for PR but after approval u should go for interview .
Dont u think your trip back to your country of persecution may not effect on immigrations final decision for GC and Citizinship???

Sessanga, I'm so happy for you.

Sessanga, I'm so happy that you were able to see your loved ones. How is your father doing now. We'll all keep him in our prayers.
One question I have for you is, did you get your I-551 stamp on your renewed passport or did you renew your passport after you got your greencard?
What did yu show at the airport passport/GC/both coming in and out of US?
I sincerely hope this doesn't cause any problem at the time of Citizenship.
Best regards,
Punjabi_Munda

Sessanga

Hi Sessanga,
Did you renew your passport before or after your I-551 stamp?
If your green card was approved on August 2004, how would you apply for Citizenship in May 2006? Don't we have to for like almost four years?

Sassanga! Are you suggesting that immigration officer asked you question about your trip to home county because he was aware that you have derived your green card through asylum? Did you he show any indication.

My opinion is that he/she did not realize that you were an Asylee at one time. The ask "ANY" green card holder that question that why and for how long they had been out of the country. I think officer did not know when he asked you all that.
Am I right?

I renewed my national passport after I-155 stamp.I will be eligible for citizenship in august of 2006 because my wife is a US citizen and i will file 3 months prior to august.

We appreciate the info

Thank you so much for the info Sessanga, we truly appreciate it. I wonder if anyone got to the bottom of old Nanok's email who told us that her brother applied for Citizenship right after he got his green card (he was asylee) and got citizenship in the same year. Has anyone tried doing it? If that was the case, what we got to lose, other than $$$ off course to give it a shot ;)

I`m 100% certain that she retrieved my profile the reason why i say that is because the first IO told me that they had to verify something he took me to the immigration office and handed me to the lady IO.There were 2 IO`s but one thing i noticed was they all left their computers and went to another computer holding peoples passports which i believe they were able to see anybody`s profile. Also remember that on back of the I-155 card there is a code COA AS6 which to them is obvious.

I don't think anybody has a clear picture on this issue. I think somebody back said that we could try, but it could be a waste of money. Anybody has any other info?

It could be for a person to file for citizenship only if he was granted PR through refugee not asylum.Remember a refuge is eligible to naturalize 5 years since granted refugee status regardless of when the GC was approved.Asylees from Syria might also be exempted.

Syrian asylees are NOT exempt for the normal citizenship requirements.
