The ICE officer at the POE took my US passport and asked "What is the purpose of visit to THE US". I said "US Citizen, live here". Later I realized I should have better replied "This is my country and I do not need a purpose to enter"

She said "Ohhhh" and then took a look into my passport.....

To give her benefit of doubt, the visitor lane was all empty and US citizens were redirected to use the visitor lane and I was the first person as US citizen in that lane.

Update: I meant CBP.

Are you sure it was ICE and not CBP? As US citizens, we are one of the few nations that have a privilege to be interrogated by the immigration officers when entering our own country. If you travel frequently, I suggest you look into the Global Entry programme to avoid long lines and intrusive questioning from the CBP.

It wasn't ICE, it was CBP. And it was the visitors' lane. I'm not surprised at all.
Will you be surprised if you return to the USA via land border and upon giving the CBP officer a US passport, he will ask you what your citizenship is while looking at the passport? :D Happened to me twice.

Same here. More than twice actually :)
