Hello people,

I hope you may help me a little to do things right, I am new in the US (Dv Lottery).

I applied for a Social Security number (card) : I will get it in 2 weeks.
I applied for a bank account.
I got an apartment (Lease + rent paid).

Now, I need to change delivery address of my greencard, I went to USCIS in Manhattan and they asked me to do it online, can you please help me with that ? they also provided me a form to send to the USCIS main office, since we are on the weekend, and Online applications are faster & reliable, did any of you made this kind of request ? if yes please give a hand.

Also, I am supposed to sign some kind of paper (related to military service I think, I am 25 y/o), can someone give me some details ?

One more question, what medical care should I apply for ? any help is welcome.

Finally, What is a Tax-Return form ? (I am originally from a tax-free country), so I am a bit confused.

Thank you all.

You have to register for the Selective Service, if you are under 26. It's very easy, you complete a form that has to be sent by post-mail, or online. Instructions are at this link: https://www.sss.gov/

This is a form that you file with the IRS(Internal Revenue Service) that determines how much do you need to pay in taxes , or get a refund, for the last year. Based on your sources of income.
So if you arrived in the US in 2015, you will file your tax return in 2016 January -- April.

Change of Address can be done online here: https://egov.uscis.gov/coa/displayCOAForm.do
Sure it's reliable.

Hello and thank you for your time & your answer.

About the greencard, they will not start working on it till I pay the $165 right ?

The GC will not be mailed out to you until the $165 fee has been paid - it's possible for the processing to have started since you landed, however, it definitely will not be mailed without the fee being paid.

Oh I see. Where does that 165 need to be paid? Was that not included when we paid at interview?
Thanks.

How long do I have to wait? And can I go back to my home country and be back next year before it comes? Or do I have to wait for it to come?

You may go provided you have a trustworthy person back in the US that can receive and keep the GC when it is delivered (or send it out to you in Nepal). However, be aware if you're staying out for more than 1 year from the date of your initial entry, the I-551 stamp on your passport will no longer be valid for readmission back into the US, so you need to ensure you have a way of getting the GC when it is delivered at the US address you've indicated.

hello everyone

Sorry to post this here, in not sure where it belongs as I am not quite in the U.S.

Regarding the first tax return (due April 2016) for us GC newbies @EmilyW @MattWatt @Hershal @Deb7a and anyone else in my group

how do I go about filing the very first one from Australia?

I am probably not going to be in the states until June, which is past the due date to file.
is it best to hire a tax accountant here is Aus? Hmmm, finding a tax agent that knows the USA irs requirements may be hard...

Also, will the irs only require info from the date of my interview? When the i551 was issued or from the USA financial year only? (Is that April 2015 to 2016?)

Any hints you have will be so helpful :)

If you are out the country on filing date or some such you can get an automatic extension till October (automatic, but you still have to apply for it) - just do a search on the IRS website for this, as it's almost certainly easier to get info on what to submit once you are actually there. You're liable for tax from the date you became a permanent resident, though most people manage to successfully offset what they've paid in tax back home before they made the permanent move.

Hi Susie,

Is the date you become a permanent resident the date you are issued/approved for your visa after the interview or is it once you've landed at your poe or once you've paid the green card fee?

Hello, I will talk behind my nephew ; I just translate for her.

I had a mistake when we did our interview as CP dv2015 lottery which it was did provide police clearance certificate for my husband who lived in in Europe for some years in the past, the Counsolor gave the visa for me and my children and my husband couldn't come with us to the usa.
All of us received our GC recently and i applied for my husband to come here 45 days after i arrived and received our GC. But as you know it will tak a lot of time process to bring my husband.

Now I am not able to live here alone with 2 young children and I would like to leave the usa and go to the home country. Do you have any advice?
Is it necessary to stay here or I can go to my home country to be there with my family until my husband make his interview and come all together.
what is the maximum time allowed to stay out of the usa. And if there is any action needs to be done before leaving?
Thanks

You can stay out for one year with a green card, or for two years if you apply for a re-entry permit before you leave.
But: if I understand this correctly, the husband can no longer get a DV based green card and the wife is petitioning him, in this case, as far as I understand, she needs to be resident in the US - and show an income big enough in the US - to do so. So if she is not staying in the US (again as far as I understand) she cannot successfully petition for a green card for him. If this is the case then this is indeed no longer a DV discussion and you would get better information in the family based forums.
