First, read the pages of the thread "DV-2011 AOS Only" for how you can adjust status smoothly.

Second, for any international students or foreigners with temporary/non-immigrant visas to join the U.S. military, they need to have lived in the U.S. for a minimum of two years (Link: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/15/us/15immig.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1). Since you have been in the U.S for only 2 months, I doubt any military branch will recruit you straightaway...unless of course you quickly and successfully adjust status and become P.R. which I suspect you plan on doing.

Third, your career path is your choice to make. You will acquire many benefits from serving in the military, but as you mention there are also dangerous trade-offs to it as you may end up in a war zone. And I don't understand why you need to join the military in order to become a network engineer. Sure, the army will pay for your education but you may also qualify for several scholarships once you become P.R. Anyway, the choice is ultimately yours. Best of luck !!!

By describing yourself as having entered as a DV winner, do you mean that you interviewed for an immigrant visa abroad and got an immigrant visa? When you entered did they stamp your passport with proof of lawful permanent residence? Did they later send you a "greencard"? A greencard holder can enlist in the military and become eligible for early naturalization (they try to get you sworn-in as a USC by the end of basic training).

As for entering the military, we are at war. That's a personal choice.

Since you have a green card you can enter the army at any time. As BigJoe mentioned above this is not something that we can decide for you. It's a personal choice.

Joining the army doesn't mean getting a study income and than decide where to go your self....The Army will decide where you have to go with all risks involved. You sign up, so you have to read the fine print...they don't hand out free education and free health care, etc. just to sit at a desk and to have the person decide what he will do....

Think before you take the decision.

He is right..

BigJoe5 and Lucky2011 have put it well. I'd add that before rushing to sign-up, take some time - alot of time to investigate the military. I wouldnt say its a bad choice, but like any career, it comes with its good side and the sacrificial side, which I need not explain. Do not wake up one morning and go to the mall and sign up with whatever recruiting station there is. You definitely need to investigate all branches of the military and which one you think suits you best.

I dont think you need military service to pursue a career as a Network Engineer. Certainly I didnt, but I am a Network Engineer. The military though does come with education benefits that could help you with that if you so wish to after your service. But if the only reason you are joining the military is to use that as a stepping stone to pursue a career in IT, then I think thats probably one of the longer tougher paths you can take.

Again, listen to what information is out there. The military is great if you come out unscathed. Employers here love people who have served, and the military makes for a great reference once you're honorably discharged.

Have you previously worked in IT out of curiosity ?
