I am a citizen of the US and my wife, originally from Mexico, was naturalized a few years after we were married. We are applying for her mother, who lives in Mexico, to get residency in the US. We filled out the I-130 and everything until now has been approved. We just paid the fees for the Affidavit of Support. So, some time soon I will have to show that we can support my mother-in-law (with form I-864). That is the problem.
I don't trust my mother-in-law. She is fairly weathly and owns several homes in Mexico. But, she always tells people how poor she is and needs help. She constantly harasses her children to send her money and uses every psycological trick to make them feel guilty for not sending her more . She has caused so many problems in my wife's family. She is sociopathic ( I know cause I looked it up on wikipedia
). I know for a fact that she has at least $600,000 (US dollars) in assets in Mexico and that is just the start. She has cash stashed away all over the place.
I am not wealthy. I may just barely hit the financial limit to show that I can support her.
Knowing my mother-in-law, she would have no problem coming to the US and taking advantage of every government assistance that she could, even though that might hurt me because of the AOS. I really don't want to fill out a Affidavit of Support for her, but I may have to.
Can she use her own assets and cash to sponsor herself?
