How do the TN visa officers actually make sure you're working where you say you are?

I'm a little confused. Do they just go by the information presented to them? What do they do if they are suspicious that someone is working somewhere else?

CBP officers are trained to detect liars. They can of course question every single detail each time anyone requests the privilege of crossing the border in any status.
And if unsatisfied with answers or information, they simply refuse entry, until they are satisfied. It is up to the traveler to provide honest answers and have access to whatever information they need to make that determination.

This is no different than how do officers know a tourist or a student isn't working somewhere they're not authorized. That's their judgement call.

Theoretically the officer could contact the employer to verify the job offer. It has never happened to me, but I also show up with a well prepared offer that doesn't raise suspicion in the first place.
