hi all, long term reader and first time poster:

My roommate returned to China two weeks ago and was going to come back yesterday. She needed to go to visit a sick parent. But airport immigration officers would not let her board the plane. They say that they need to investigate her "case" because she got asylum in the West. I have heard many Chinese asylees come and go without issue from the government. What can we do now? They took away both her GC and Chinese passport.

She should try to contact US Consulate because she has a legal right to return back to the US. GC is the property of US Dept of Homeland Security so technically Chinese cannot take that away, however they can take away her chinese passport.

Maybe bribing corrupt chinese officials is one option, but I would hold it last.

are you sure?
as i know ,when you go aboard, chinese gov do not check the category which your GC below ,they just check you do have a GC with you
and i do not think chinese gov have privilege to take her GC away.
but i think there is no way to deal with it. if you are telling the true story

I don't think that issue is taking the GC away.Even if they return it , she still will be stuck as long as is not able to leave the country. In my opinion she needs solve it with authority and the bad part is that she is AS6, and this makes it even worse. This is simply political issue and Chinese government is trying to prove that asylee and refugees claims are baseless.I know that In many cases authority of some other countries, force the individuals to write and sign that their asylum claim was a lie or fabricated to order to show UN or human rights agencies that all claims are lies and they are not what their citizens claim.
It is really tough to be in such a situation. Please update the froum with her situation.

Not the first this has happened to someone dumb enough to visit China. Not the last time either. It is hard to have sympathy for her.

Wow, that's a little harsh. You must've missed the part that she is visiting a sick parent. As someone whose mother was battling cancer back in the COP a little while ago, I'm glad that you never had to go through this kind of thing.

While I have sympathy for her sick mom, if you file for asylum because your country of prosecution ... well prosecutes you, and the go back and they ... well prosecute you ... then it shouldn't come as a surprise to you. Maybe your friend will have to settle for living in China again. Its absolutely within the Chinese government's right to keep their citizens within the country indefinitively.
