Happy Independence day

It has already dawned in India. Pt. Nehru's speech makes us realize that there is so much to look forward to. Also an opportunity to forgive and forget some petty squabbles that we have seen on this forum and to allow this forum to remain what it is meant for.

"Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially.

At the stroke of midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, then an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. It is fitting that at this solemn moment we take the pledge of dedication to India and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity.

At the dawn of history India started on her unending quest, and trackless centuries are filled with her striving and the grandeur of her successes and her failures. Through good and ill fortune alike she has never lost sight of that quest or forgotten the ideals which gave her strength. We end today a period of ill fortune and India discovers herself again.

The achievement we celebrate today is but a step, an opening of opportunity, to the greater triumphs and achievements that await us. Are we brave enough and wise enough to grasp this opportunity and accept the challenge of the future?

Freedom and power bring responsibility. That responsibility rests upon this assembly, a sovereign body representing the sovereign people of India. Before the birth of freedom we have endured all the pains of labour and our hearts are heavy with the memory of this sorrow. Some of those pains continue even now.

Nevertheless, the past is over and it is the future that beckons to us now.

That future is not one of ease or resting but of incessant striving so that we might fulfill the pledges we have so often taken and the one we shall take today. The service of India means the service of the millions who suffer. It means the ending of poverty and ignorance and disease and inequality of opportunity. The ambition of the greatest man of our generation has been to wipe every tear from every eye. That may be beyond us but so long as there are tears and suffering, so long our work will not be over.

And so we have to labour and to work, and work hard, to give reality to our dreams. Those dreams are for India, but they are also for the world, for all the nations and peoples are too closely knit together today for any one of them to imagines that it can live apart. Peace has been said to be indivisible, so is freedom, so is prosperity now, and so also is disaster in this one world that can no longer be split into isolated fragments.

To the people of India whose representatives we are, we make appeal to join us with faith and confidence in this great adventure. This is no time for petty and destructive criticism, no time for ill-will or blaming others. We have to build the noble mansion of free India where all her children may dwell."

Hope you enjoyed it and work towards the welfare of
INDIA.

Whatever anyone says about India and whatever the rich and great history we have, the fact still remains that we are a poor country fighting among ourselves with respect to religion, caste, region and language. This also makes me wonder how India is united after all without dividing.

Some forgotten facts :

By Shahid M. Amin

Nations that forget their past become rudderless and confused. They can also lose a real sense of national purpose. With the passage of time, it seems that there are many people in Pakistan who have forgotten the background to the creation of Pakistan as well as the historical motivations of the Muslims of the subcontinent that eventually led to the creation of a separate country in 1947.

Instead, there has been a considerable distortion of historical facts by certain quarters, which have been pursuing agendas of their own. One of such historical facts is that the Muslims made the demand for the break-up of India only as late as 1940. Partition was not their first preference. This demand was made by the Muslims only when it seemed to them that the Hindu majority was absolutely determined to deny to the Muslims their due rights within a united India.

The political struggle of the Muslims since 1858 had centred on securing their political, economic and cultural rights in India. Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the great pioneer of Muslim political revival, had himself been a strong believer of Hindu-Muslim unity, until he was jolted by the Hindu agitation against Urdu, which was the lingua franca of the sub-continent and the language of administration in many parts of India. Urdu was also the repository of the best in Muslim literary and cultural traditions.

The campaign against Urdu was, therefore, seen by Sir Syed and by most Muslims as an attack on their very existence as a distinct religious and cultural group. This impelled Sir Syed to describe Muslims and Hindus as two nations, but he never demanded the break-up of India on religious grounds. Of course, at the time, Sir Syed saw British imperialism as unchallengeable and the issue of independence and a separate Muslim homeland probably did not seem relevant to him.

However, when the British rulers decided in the 1880s to introduce a system of rudimentary democracy in India, Sir Syed told the Viceroy that the English system of open elections would not be suitable for India. The English people had a common religion and culture but in India there were vast differences based on religion and caste. A system of open elections would mean that the majority (Hindu) community would totally override the interests of the minority (Muslim) community. He, therefore, asked for separate electorates so that the Muslims could get representation according to their number.

Separate electorates and one-third representation in the Central Legislature (corresponding to the percentage of the Muslims in India's population) were the two main Muslim demands until the 1930s. The Hindu-dominated Congress Party conceded these two demands in 1916. The Lucknow Pact, negotiated by Jinnah, was seen at the time - and could well have been the solution to Hindu-Muslim differences. Unfortunately, the Congress soon thereafter went back on its pledged word.

Even so, Jinnah tried hard in the Delhi Muslim Proposals of 1927 and his three amendments to the Nehru Report of 1928 to reach a common ground with the Hindus. He even managed to persuade the Muslim leaders to drop the demand for Separate Electorates but insisted firmly on one-third Muslim representation in the Central Legislature. As it was, the Congress summarily rejected even this modest and eminently reasonable Muslim demand. Jinnah said this was the parting of the ways. Still, neither in his Fourteen Points of 1929, nor in the three Round Table Conferences held in London from 1930 to 1932, there was any Muslim demand for the break-up of India.

When a Muslim student, Chaudhry Rehmat Ali, put forward the Pakistan idea in 1933, Jinnah and other Muslim leaders were unwilling to accept it. The division of India would have meant leaving behind the traditional centres of Muslim culture, as well as a significant number of Muslims, in a Hindu-dominated India. This was seen at the time as an unpalatable choice. However, the Congress Rule from 1937 to 1939 became the turning point for the Muslims of India who had the shock of their lives as the Hindus went all out to impose their political and cultural ideas on the Muslims. Many Muslims now feared the destruction of their way of life in a Hindu-dominated independent India.

Thus, the demand for the break-up of India in 1940 was made when the Muslims came to the conclusion that the Hindu majority was simply not willing to concede their basic rights in a united India. In this context, the bitter Muslim experience during the Congress Rule acted as the catalyst.

It is arguable that if the Hindu majority had adopted a fair and reasonable attitude towards Muslim demands, there would have been no division of India and no Pakistan. It is also worth remembering that, even as late as 1946, when the Cabinet Mission proposed a united India in which two regions in the north-west and north-east would have assured Muslim majority, the Quaid-i-Azam persuaded the Muslim League to accept this proposal. This proved that the first priority for the Muslims remained the protection of their rights in the whole of the subcontinent, while the creation of a separate state was negotiable.

The second historical fact, forgotten by many, concerns the nature of Pakistan's polity. The Lahore Resolution of 1940, which enunciated the demand for Pakistan, did not say that Pakistan would be an Islamic state or that Islam would be its state religion. Instead, it stressed that the rights of the non-Muslim minority in the new country would be fully safeguarded. The Lahore Resolution expected that the whole of the provinces of Punjab and Bengal would be included in the new state. This would have meant that a significant non-Muslim minority (Hindus and Sikhs) would have been living in Pakistan.

Hence, the Lahore Resolution did not say anything about Pakistan becoming an Islamic state. In fact, till his death in 1948, whenever the Quaid-i-Azam was asked, he kept insisting that Pakistan would not be a theocracy. He was a life-long believer in secularism and there was nothing in his political career that suggested that he would opt for a state in which religion would take primacy in state matters.

This was also what the Quaid-i-Azam envisaged in his speech of August 11, 1947, while presiding over the first session of the Pakistan Constituent Assembly, when he said that Muslims and Hindus would have equal status in Pakistan. It is also a fact that some of the greatest Muslim rulers of India, like the first five Mughal emperors and Sher Shah Suri, were secular in their rule. Incidentally, out of over fifty Muslim countries in the world, at present, the overwhelming majority has secular constitutions.

As it turned out, since the death of the Quaid-i-Azam, contrary to his wishes and the declared objective of the Lahore Resolution as also the background of the Muslim political struggle in the subcontinent since the 19th century, the Islamic extremists have in effect hijacked the Pakistan demand. They have been busy rewriting history and indeed misrepresenting the motivations and background of the Pakistan movement.

It is even more ironic that most of such Islamic extremists belong to the parties that had resolutely opposed the demand for the creation of Pakistan during the 1940s and, at that time, missed no chance to abuse the Quaid-i-Azam himself for demanding Pakistan. But since then, these parties have assumed the mantle of protectors of Pakistan's ideology!

The third historical fact that we should remember is that it was the Muslims of the minority provinces (which now constitute India) who had led the struggle for the creation of Pakistan. They were the ones who had suffered most from maltreatment by the Hindu majority, particularly during the infamous Congress Rule, which inspired them to work wholeheartedly for the creation of a separate country for the Muslims.

These Muslims in the minority provinces knew that they would not be going to Pakistan and yet they staked everything in the belief that, in a united India, Muslims had no real future. They were determined, therefore, that at least their brethren in the Muslim-majority provinces should have a place under the sun where the great Muslim way of life could be preserved.

Nor should we forget the key role played by the Bengali Muslims in the struggle for the creation of Pakistan (even though tragic misunderstandings led to their separation from Pakistan in 1971).

Many in Pakistan who claim a monopoly of patriotism need to remember that in the Muslim-majority provinces, which now constitute Pakistan, the attitude of many towards the demand for Pakistan was less than enthusiastic. The Frontier Province came out in favour of Pakistan only one month before its creation. Punjab had a non-Muslim League government until four months before Pakistan came into being.

It is strange that, forgetting the historical record, there are those who take all the credit for the creation of Pakistan while forgetting the sacrifices of the Muslims left behind in India. We also take little or no interest in the welfare of Indian Muslims who continue to suffer for their role in the creation of Pakistan. As a nation, we must recall history in the correct perspective, avoid distortions and learn the right lessons from it.

Isn't it ironic that Hindus are held to a higher standard than any other religions to preserve secularism. We all know that Jinnah wanted a separate country since he could not become the PM.

Only in India that other religions can have their own laws and there is no common civil code.

Bold Trueth

Even by not questioning anything on your statistics, I want to point you to something.
When you say India in your Statistic it includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Burma, Srilanka, Bhutan, Maldhives and so on.

I know for fact that when corporates define ethnicity for their employees everybody from that region are called Indian.

The fact is muslims in Indian Subcontinent ruled the Hindus for ten centuries and could not bear the fact that they were loosing control with the advent of british in India.

They fought the british vigoursly not to save the people of India who are Hindus by majority but to save their thrones.

But when british were leaving and India becoming a democracy, the muslims realized they will not be able to control the Hindu masses anymore.

Also as pointed in the article that it was current Indian muslims who have fought for division of the country based on religion.

These are the same people who thought that Hyderabad (deccan) and other muslim dominated areas in India would also be part of the Pakistan and did not migrate to either east Pakistan or west pakistan (now bangladesh).

Now that they know reality that they have to stay in India, they have come with ideas like Secularism and blah, blah blah to protect themselves.

Do not get me wrong. I am not against secularism.

But I cannot bear the fact that the same muslims who have fought for their religion's rights and division of the country, today talk about secularism just to protect themselves. What a hipocracy.

Anyone who vists the Vijayanagar ruled by Krishnadevaraya in the south will see the ruthlessness with which the muslim kings of India have destroyed the Hindu culture and religion of India.

Please see the links below.

And can we forget the destruction caused by Muhammad of Ghazni (see below link) and Muhammad Ghori to the great culture of India.

I pray that atleast now people in India will get educated with these facts or else as I have said earlier , Indians can take it for granted that Indian will be an islamic country in next 50 years.

Muslims in India have grown from 12 % to 25 % Since Independence to tilldate. If the same trend continues, by 2050 Indian will have 50 % muslims.

The maximum any party has received is less than 40% of votes polled in any of the general elections so far.

So with 50% population, muslims in India would get 2/3 rds majority and will declare Islamic Republic of India.

Today on Indian Independence day I bow my head to salute all the Great Freedom fighters without whose efforts we would not been the same.

Wake!! Up Indians.

Thanks

It is very frightening to see that there is a possibility that the Muslims become a majority in India. Muslims in India should be well educated so that they will have only 1 or 2 kids. The other thing is that India should have a uniform civil code so that all the religions should follow the same law. I hope the BJP gets a majority and implements this in the next election.

The religion should start campaigning to convert people to Hinduism. It should not be done forcibly as some VHP members are doing. There is a major loophole in Hinduism in order to do this. What caste will the person belong to after that person is converted. So as long as we have castes in the religion, we are definitely going to become the minority. I would really think that the caste system has been wiped out when I see a Harijan becoming a priest in a temple.

Hi frantic,

Per my understanding, anyone can become a priest in a Temple (including a muslim) as long as the person has the required knowledge/qualifications to perform the duties as a priest.

This was clarified by SC recently if I am not wrong.

Thanks

According to law, anyone can become but my question is will the people attend. Also do you know of any temple that has a non-brahmin priest.

Illiterates, irrespective of their religious affiliation, will be a burden to the nation! They will also be fanatical about their way of life!

While I agree with Uniform Civil Code for all people to follow and removal of caste system from our society, I can NOT see the logic in even thinking about converting people to Hinduism!!!!

How do you convert a person to Hinduism? Make that person go to the temple everyday, chant Hindu mantras and apply Holy Ash and Kumkum on their foreheads???? If so, what do you do with people who are obviously hindus but do not do any of the above? Disown them?

Conversion is a TOTALLY meaningless action! Rain, love, belief in God (supreme power), attachment to a religion should come automatically; they can NOT be forced! If anything comes out of force, it has no meaning. Hinduism survived the onslaught of so many foreign powers and doesn't require anybody to protect it.

The one thing I see any reason in, is stopping or hindering any proselytizing attempts by various missionaries. But, this is a very gray area; how do you prove whether an individual converted on his own or because of proselytizing??

a lower caste hindu will never be allowed to the Temple of upper caste. They can salute the upper caste GOD from a mile apart with bare foot but never close. I will tell you a story of Kashmiri Brahman (Considered to be the higher class of the upper class)my friends.
When that guy came to US his Gransma told four things.
1. We want you to marry a Kashmiri Brahman Girl.
2. If you slip and want to marry someone in US marry a white girl.
3. If you slip more and in love with a kashmiri/panjabi muslim girl we will be very upset but we will approve this.
4. But you must never marry a black girl.

Se how race, color and caste clouded the whole Indian Hindu community.

Cheers it's Friday.

Hinduism in my opinion is not a religion, it is an institution. Though there are some not so good things about Hinduism like caste system, there are very positive things like tolerance, respect to elders, peaceful etc. When you say you convert people to Hinduism you are imbibing these values to them. Imagine India where people have those principles and values. We wouldn't have so many problems.

Islam on the other hand considers all non-followers as infidels. Imagine the world if the values of tolerance were imbibed in Islam.

Coming to "proselytizing", why would anyone convert to other religion if they were accepted wholly in their religion.

frantic,

I would agree with hinduism is more of an institution than a religion; partly i do so because it is very difficult to list out the actions that make you a hindu.

Anyway, the values that you spoke about are that of the Indian society or way of life and can not be attributed to any one religion. There are muslims and christians in India who are peace loving, tolerant and respectful to elders! I'm all for promoting these values but can not claim them to be hindu qualities.

The consideration of non-believers as infidels is a radical islam concept! It is how some fanatics have interpreted Islam. I have never read Quran but I can bet that it is not said that way in it!! Just like we have VHP, RSS and Shiv Sena other religions have their own share of idiots.

Coming back to proselytizing, I have seen quite a few people convert or think about converting to other religions NOT because they were not fully accepted in hinduism! But, many of those have had quite a few setbacks in life and believe the preachers when they say "believe in Jesus or Allah and all your problems will vanish". These folks are so beaten in life (not by anyone in particular or even by anything connected to religion) and are clutching at straws to get out of a crappy situation that they are willing to try anything that comes their way. Some people are not very strong at heart (no offence meant here) and can't see the difference between the practical problems of life and the guidance provided by religion. Some do think that if they believe in Shiva, then Shiva HAS to come to their aid when they are in trouble. Life doesn't work that way.

By converting to another religion their problem still exists but they get the illusion that it has gone away because of change of scenery.

Yes!! I know couple of temples where Brahmins are not priests.

Surely one of the priest in the famous temple in kerala is a muslim.

But I think the following points needs to be clarified.

Castesim exists but I think the whole issue has been wrongly understood, interpreted and protrayed.

I have not seen any hindu scripture which says that casteism is inherited by birth. This is a misconception among many which have resulted into many problems today.

No person is a Kyasthriya or a Brahmin or a visya or a sudra by birth .

CASTE CANNOT/IS NOT INHERITED.

A person becomes one of the above by virtue of one's knowlegde/education or lack of it.

This has become a thumb rule over the centuries due to the selfishness and greed of the people.

So do not abuse the caste system. Abuse people who have misused the system.

(This is anologous to say ban the H1Bs as someone had abused it ).

Interpreting the caste system in true sense today

I consider all Defense, Police,Paramilitary and politicians like Vajpayee, Advani, Lalloo, Mulayam, Mayawati etc as Kyastriyas

I consider all bureaucrats like IAS officers, Election Commissioners, University professors, State govt secretaries as Brahmins

I consider all Business people, Investors etc as Vaisyas

All the rest as Sudras who work as normal workers either in factories or on a farm.

Caste system is a fact of life.

It exists not only in Indian but every part of the world.

It is nothing but that the class/category one fall by virtue of one's knowledge/ability/profession.

Instead of people crying and screeming about caste system, people should strive to educate people on dignity of labor.

I do not see why some should get offended by being a sudra.

Ofcourse everyone wants to do a white collar job rather than a blue collar job.

Even a illegal immigrat from mexico working on farm in US would like her/his kids to be CEO of a big Software gaint.

Now the problem arises when let's say someone makes a law/rule which says childern of the CEO are only qualified to be CEO of the company.

This may work in home run businesses(Read as Kings and Kigdoms) but certainly not in listed companies (read as Democracy).

So instead of abusing the caste system , educate and correct the people who have abused the system over the centuries.

WAKE!! UP Indians

BE PROUD!! not arrogant.

Thanks

Talking about conversions...

A selfish person will always remain selfish no matter what one's religion is and the religion says.

Here are some points

>> Do people realize that even after conversion, discrimination based on caste system exists among converted christians in India.

>> Have you noticed the hipocracy that people change religion from Hindu to christian but still claim reservations based on Hindu caste system.

Thanks

Good points all. Though people convert to Christianity in faith partly because they are not accepted well in Hinduism and partly they are given huge sums of money by the missionaries, they still belong to Hinduism on paper to avail themseleves of reservations. So the bottom line is money. Had we not have the caste system in the first place, we would not have had the reservations and these conversions.

Hi waytoolong,

Yes !! surely many people are selfish and will act accordingly.

From my personal experience I know that I use to pay Rs 750 as fee per semister but my friend who is a converted christian use to pay only Rs 300 as he is a christian.

I do not have a problem with that as the college subsidises the fee for christians as it is a run by a christian missionary whose job is to propagate their religion.

If the person says I like to become a christian as I like it or I benefit being a christian that is understandable and it is their right.

But the problem is people abuse Hindu caste system to change their religion and use the same caste system even after conversion to get admissions in colleges and jobs.

This is height of hypocrisy!!!

Thanks

pingpong02, no matter what you say as a religion Hinduism is very closed and doesn't allow other castes to take care of priestly duties. It is like catholics have long not allowed women to become priests. Actually it is worse than that. Have you ever noticed the board in Tirupathi "Foreginers are not allowed inside." and though Yesudas has sung so many songs about Lord Shiva, he was (I don't know if he is still) not allowed in to the Guruvayirappa temple.
