So when you sign up, is it upto them whether they put you on reserve or active duty in Iraq?

U decide if u want to join as an active duty or a reservist. It's immediate for those who are active, but I think u need to wait 1 yr in the active reserve..

First, you have to pass a test to join.Second, don't join the military for citizenship purpose.Join the military because you want to serve. Then, the citizenship comes as a result of your job.You guys have been waiting for GC for 4-5 years.I don't see why not wait for 3 years and 9 months to get easily your citizenship.Waiting for 3 years and 9 months to be US citizen without any risk is better than doing the same in a year with a risk to get killed in battle, after being enrolled to the military.

We are not dicussing the morals/pros&cons of joining, we are only bringing up the option!

And the test that you are taking about is called the ASVAB Exam, and any high schooler can pass it!

Dont you have to be of certain age to join?

Actually the best time to join military have been when we were granted asylum. Because if you would contacted Military recruiter, he could have ordered INS to issue GC for a person who wants to serve in military. A lot of people do not know that.

NOw its not much of an incentive as quota for asylum is gone and they would processing applications very fast anyway. I might have given it a shot, had I known it in 1999 right after my asylum approval, also when I was getting out of college.

Wantmygcnow, you need to be at least 32 to join.Last year,as asylee,I tried here in Brooklyn, New York.I was stopped taking my exam in testing room when a recruiter told me that they found out and I couldn't join because I was not yet PR.Then he saked me to come back once I get my GC.Now as PR,don't care any more, cause I work for New York Police Depatment. At time,I was thinking to speed up my GC in joining the Military, but I was wrong.

The military will not take you without a green card. This is firm. And they could not speed up your adjustment when the asylee cap was in effect. Now they can if the military wants you badly.

Also should a draft be restated then everyone is eligible and can become a citizen instantly (without a green card too).

Wow, that is very interesting, can anyone tell me whether they have certain types of job that don't require you to be in battlefield? Like, I can handle their stock trading or mutual fund investment?

It may depend also what dept within the Navy …not sure, I was desperately looking for the job in 2003 and saw this newspaper ad about joining Navy based on professional technical background, on the first interview I was told to come back once PR status is obtained (same as cadel's story...) and then a week after I got another call form Navy officer from neighbor city advising that it's very possible to do so but on the interview after looking in to details recruiter said that now I have be 33 years old
