GC issued but no passport. How to travel?

Hi y’all

Searched it but found little information.

Received my GC through asylum within 9-10 months (see my posts if you want you know my timeline). My passport expiration date passed (2023).

I want to travel to Canada and Europe.

Should I apply to get a new passport from my country’s consulate in the US?

Should I apply for the travel doc or AP? Which one?

Or both?

Or should I just travel to the countries that accept our GC?

What are your experiences?

Hello,
From what I gather, and heard from my lawyer, the safest way if you want to travel internationally is by applying for a Refugee Travel Document (RTD). RTD only last for 1 year and there are some countries that doesn't recognize it as a passport, it's not the most convenient document, but again, the safest way to go.

Please do not apply for your cop passport as that's considered still getting the benefit from the country that you claimed prosecution from, which may be questioned if your goal is to be a citizen.
You may be able to use cop to travel just fine, but the problem you're going to get is during your citizenship test.
A lot of people here thinks that's it's ok to apply for a cop passport and will recommend you to also travel with it, so do your own research before believing people's recommendation in the forum. There is a split opinion here about this topic and the risk is your choice to take.

There are a lot of reliable sources out there in the internet if you search "Traveling with asylum based Green Card" on Google.
The results will mostly say ONLY travel with RTD, and not cop.
If still uncertain, do consult with a good immigration lawyer before traveling.

Thank you! Yes, RTD has some advantages but as a GC holder, I don’t want to do something wrong. So I decided to go with RP.

Thank you for the heads-up! Yes, maybe I will not apply to a new passport from COP. But at the same time, I wonder what they will ask during the citizenship interview. I will not travel to my country. To other ones.

I will search for those key words! Thank you!

As a permanent resident with the AS category, you are entitled to the RTD. You would not be doing anything wrong. However, the validity makes it mostly useless, so even if you need more visas with the RP, I recommend it over the RTD.

You should apply for a new passport at your country’s consulate in the US. Additionally, if you're concerned about re-entering the US, you may want to apply for Advance Parole (AP). Many countries in Canada and Europe allow entry with just your Green Card, but a valid passport is typically required for travel. Check the specific entry requirements for each country you plan to visit.

A GC holder is not eligible to apply for AP! This document is for applicants with pending I-485.
