so finally the day arrived and attended the interview at fed plaza. the lady was nice and the interview was very quick.

she said that the second a file is not with her and she needs to review it to clear my case. Also she has to validate the travel dates and my employer.

has anyone seen such a case. what usually happens when they say that they will get back

Your A file is basically the file that the USCIS has on you. All your applications and any dealing with them are in there. Apparently she is still waiting for part of it.

Not getting a decision right after the interview is understandably disappointing, but it's rather common. By law they now have 120 days to approve or deny your application.

Also, sometimes you may have two different A files that have to be consolidated before adjudication.

HEY NAINA!

Dont be disappointed, everything will be just fine my cousin had the same experience the contacted him 2 weeks after.
Im sending my application tomorrow im very excited.
Good luck and keep us posted

A-FILE

A-FILE is the folder that contains all your immigration History, all forms and documetation that you sent to USCIS for an immigration benefit just to name few I-130 or I-140 including suppoting evidence,I-485, I-751 etc...
they have to have all in one place before a decision can be made, so hang in there.

So wonder why would they call you for an interview without all files in place.

Bob, yes she mentioned 2 files. She had one and did not receive the other one.

They likely only found out about 2nd A file during review process, and must first request the 2nd one from NBC to consolidate it with 1st one.

Hello Bobsmyth:

Why do some folks such as naina123 have multiple A# files? I thought all immigrants will have one A# file that covered their entire US immigration history as an immigrant. It is my understanding that an A# is only issued at the time of applying for legal permanent residence status i.e., Green Card (GC). All prior non-immigrant information such as H1 Visa or F1 Visa information is absorbed within this file as we have to submit all relevant information during the filing of the GC. I kindly request your clarification of the need / practice of USCIS to maintain multiple A files for an immigrant.

Cheers...

Sometimes applicants have multiple A# files. For example, back in 2007 USCIS created a 2nd A# for candidates for some reason. Why they don't consolidate A# files to begin with is beyond me.

Bobsmyth,

my & wife I-485 started at vermont service center and got approved from seattle, WA, so its mean we both have two "A" files, they already transferred my wife case.

You think they waiting on my Name check ?
Should I wait a few more days?

Did you confirm that you both have 2 A# cases or are you assuming you do?
If your file has been transferred to local DO it's a sign that they will schedule interview very soon. Give it another 3-4 weeks before you inquire with USCIS.

Bobsmyth:
Thank you for the clarification and link regarding multiple A#s issued in 2007. This is interesting.... Those who fall in this boat (such as naina123) should probably have been aware of this situation prior hand i.e., when they went through their GC process they would have been aware that they have been given 2 A#s.
During the N-400 process, can they preempt the situation by checking with USCIS prior to interview to determine if both the A# files are available with the local DO for interview and action?
Cheers....

Likely this is beyond USCIS capability for efficiency.

how to find out my other a number

interesting to see that i did not know that the second a file will have another a number. I am aware of one on my green card a number alone. how do i get my second a number?

I hope I don't have 2 files. I moved here from CA, and I hope that move doesn't create problems for me. Maybe my file won't have arrived when I go for my interview. I hope it's there...
