Emergency Travel Document

Hello everybody,

I need to visit my father urgently. He is not feeling well, and I have not seen him in 9 years. He doesn't live in my COP and I am not going to my COP. I need to get an emergency travel document (RTD). How can I do that? Do I need to fill a different form from I131 or do I use the same form (if yes, where do I indicate that I want an emergency one)? I have done that once in 2003, but I can't find any of the instructions and I also thought maybe things have change since then. Also, do I need to pay extra for the emergency request? And how soon can you get an RTD if you have applied for an emergency one? I really do appreciate all your help. I am trying to leave sometimes in July, so I really need it very soon.

You just need a cover letter explaining your circumstances plus documentation to back up your story (medical documents in your case).

Also write in bold outside the envelop "EXPEDITE REQUEST"

You should also talk to your congressional office and ask if they are willing to forward the request for you.

Thanks Thankful. I appreciate it. By the way, is documentation i.e medical doc a must? I am just afraid that it will take me longer to get the necessary doc, and I don't want to "use" up whatever time I have left getting documents from the country where my dad lives.

I would not call it a must, but it would be very helpful to your case. The case would be weaker if it were based only your what you claimed. Can you just ask the attending physician to write a note on his or her letterhead? You can have it translated here by someone else.
