Driver’s License Renewal Rejected at DMV

As my DL is due for renewal in Jan 07, I visited the DMV office today to renew it. The DMV supervisor asked for my status, so I show him an I-94 card showing I’m an asylee. I also showed him my approval letter (which was issued back in 2000) with an attached I-94 that says that I am an approved asylee. He said that I have to have an approved I-797C to receive service. I argued, but no result.

So I am left with a DL that will expire soon. The asylee status is becoming a curse for me especially with the long wait for GC.

I guess I should visit an immigration office and ask for advise, however any advise on how I should approach this matter would be greatly appreciated. :(

I’m still waiting for the GC…………..

Same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. I only went to change my address, since my dl was originally valid for like 4 more years after the date i went to the dmv. I handed my asylum approval letter along with the i-94 to the clerk, and my work permit, stupid me!!!!, which was valid for less than a month by then. She said she had to give me a license with the same expiration date as on my work permit since it was the most recent document i got from immigration, so i asked him to give me back my original license. and he refused. I asked for a supervisor, she was not helping at all, and i ended up with a license valid for like 3 weeks...

Like 2 months later I went back, handed only my asylum letter to the dmv clerk, and she gave me a license valid until 2010...

I am already a PR, but haven't notified the DMV yet. I recently changed my address online, and got the new dl in the mail.. You might either try that, or simply go to a different dmv office and hope to come accross a diligent clerk..

It's the DMV, after all !!!!

Better luck next time.

Well, I read this thread and remembered that my DL expires soon.
So I went to local DMV today (I'm on Hawaii), showed them my California DL and original SSN card. No questions were asked. I failed a written test though and was asked to come back in a week.

Well, I am in New York City and I have an asylum case in the immigration court going on right now. Just last week, I went to the DMV to change my driver license class and all I had to do was fill up a form and they wanted to look at my driver's license and pay the required fee. They never asked me about my immigration status. I hope I don't get a suprise in the mail.

Just keep trying!

Those DMV people are just stupids. When you go renew, change address, etc on your DL **** DO NOT**** SHOW ANYTHING THEY DON'T ASK YOU FOR.

They would rather not give you the DL than get in trouble, because they don't know what they are doing. I would go back to the same DMV and leave with my DL. Hell I would. It happenned to me when I 1st applied for my SS and they did not want to give it to me with the judge letter. I created such a scene, asked them to SHOW me the law in writing, in an official document where it sais that an Immigration Judge's Letter was nothing for the SS Office, and even asked them, "-So you are telling me that you have more power than the judge?"-and it worked.
But that is me. I will not give up. We asylees are an immigrant class apart, that people are NOT trained to deal with. Either we educate ourselves to educate people, or we will suffer these situations until the day we receive the pink card.

I read a thred here where someone knew the exact page for an Airline Handbook where it mentioned the veracity of a RTD. And that SAVED his trip when he pointed it out to an airline employee at the airport. Way to go.

Ok my brother is going through a similar case. He lost his driving licence and lost his licence # ,so he can't apply it online. He went and try to get a new one today and he gave the clerk his social #. The clerk said that there's a case on the place where we applied for the asylum at, and they told him to get back as soon as he got the case cleared up..what should he do? I don't have any problem renewing mine, since I renew it online. He is a deravative asylee from my mom that we got in 2004....should we contact the USCIS office or hire a lawyer or both? This is in Georgia btw.
