Upon arrival to US after obtaining green card do my parents have to declare any assets in this country or abroad?
If there is no income do they still pay taxes?
What others are they liable for ?

thanks

Filing of tax return in the U.S. by a G.C.holder.

Hi LucyMO, -- you mean a Green Card holder will have to file I.T.Return in the U.S. even if he/she doesn't have income or taxable income here is it ? Please clarify. Thanks.

Now That You Are A Permanent Resident

yes, that's exactly what I mean.

Rights
As a Permanent Resident you have most of the rights of a United States Citizen but there are some exceptions.

Rights
To live permanently in the United States provided you do not commit any actions that would make you removable (deportable) under the immigration law (section 237, Immigration and Nationality Act).
To be employed in the United States at any legal work of your qualification and choosing.
To be protected by all of the laws of the United States, your state of residence and local jurisdictions.
To vote in local elections where United States Citizenship is not required.
Exceptions
Some jobs will be limited to United States Citizens because of security concerns.
You may not vote in elections limited to United States Citizens.

Responsibilities
You are required to obey all of the laws of the United States, the States, and localities. You are required to file your income tax returns and report you income to the US Internal Revenue Service and State IRS. You are expected to support the democratic form of government and cannot attempt to change the government through illegal means. If you are a male, age 18 through 25, you are required to register with the Selective Service.

LucyMO, thanks a lot for the detailed response and link to the website.
still trying to figure out, though, how one pays taxes when there is no income:p

and by 'other things liable' i meant is there anything else they need to do. so far they only entered and had their ID card. Since they are 60 and 68 can they get any medical or other assistance (in florida).
thanks

In most cases, you don't. However, you shouldn't forget state property taxes, which are levied on assets like a home and automobiles.

Since they are 60 and 68 can they get any medical or other assistance (in florida).

They can use some of those untaxed assets to actually PAY for their medical insurance and care!

You should watch out for capital gains tax, however. If you your parents sell their home overseas and have not lived in it for two of the last five years before the date of sale, I believe they will be liable for US capital gains tax on the profit from the sale: they will owe tax on the difference between the sale price and the cost basis.
