Credit Check for 485

I was just wondering if anyone can advise on the issue of credit checks for the GC process.

I was in the US a few yrs back and got laid off and left all my credit card debts and left the US...now I am back and am applying for the GC...my credit is not good and also one of the companies had filed a civil case against me for not paying (I think it was a Federal credit union).

Just wanted to know if this will have any implications on the GC and what I can do to avoid problems.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Here's a novel suggestion for you - why don't you try doing the decent thing and pay your debts off.

(to be applying for a gc, you've obviously been here at least 2 years, if not longer, and it sounds like you've done nothing about your financial obligations but avoid them and worry about the impact to your personal gc application. I don't see any concern for the people/organizations that in good faith extended you credit and are now left out of pocket and some are expending more money to make you fulfill your obligations)

You know, your selfish attitude makes me wonder how many other immigrants that have been laid off have taken the same f*ck you attitude and fully extended their credit balance and left the country with their purchases. I wonder too how this theft by other would be immigrants have negatively affected Americans perception of myself and other hard working immigrants that feel the necessity to pay the debts they incur.

If I were you in your situation

then I would be more worried about staying out of jail than GC...:D

I have seen this question before in this forum and the answer was INS does not check credit history for GC.
I would consult with a good attorney though. Murthy charges $200 for 20 minutes consultation but it's worth it because you will get peace of mind.
You should also talk to consumer credit agency who helps you with debt consolidation if you are not able to payoff the debt at once. It's not the best solution but it will show that you are making some efforts to clean up your credit history.
If you are considering to stay here permanently then you have to deal with it at some point because you won't be able to own home or do anyother big purchase without good credit.
Good luck and take care.

1. INS does not run credit check
2. Civil suit will not adversely affect GC processing.
3. Some more people like you and say good buy to credit cards, mortgages and other loans because new immigrants are not gonna get them until they become either citizen or PR.
4. Getting GC is easy compared to dealing with creditors.
5. Without good credit history, you will, highly unlikely, able to live respectable and comforting life even after getting GC.

Last but not least,

.... hell... you probably know it.
