Can Canadian wait for I485 without EAD?

I'm Canadian holding H4 which will expire this year and I don't intend to work. What status will I be if I don't have EAD or must I have EAD?

The EAD is just that - an employment authorization document. It does not, contrary to common belief, confer any sort of immigration status. If you do not intend to work, you don't need one.

Once your H-4 expires, you will be out-of-status but will remain lawfully present in the US as long as your I-485 is pending. This is because I-485 applicants are allowed to remain in the US while awaiting a decision on their applications. You can apply for an EAD at any later time should you decide to work - as long as the I-485 remains pending of course.

If you filed the I-485, you will still be legally present in the US even after your H4 expires. Did you file the I-485?

The only concern if you let youe H4 to go is, you have AP if you want to travel abroad if not, you do not need AP either.

If the spouse is on valid H1 status then he/she can get H4 visa stamp from US consulate Or can use valid AP to enter US.

if your spouse is on H1 status then you can also file H4 extension before your I-94 gets expired.
