can asylee go to law school?

I am an asylee and I want to go to law school. Would my status be a problem? Can I get financial aid?

Yes you can. Immigration status (being an asylee) does not present a problem. You can claim in state tuition if you go to a public school.

In terms of financial aid, you can get the stafford loan like every other American. Private loans might be a little tougher. But you can always use the the grad plus loan and pay the higher interest rate.

Why is Virginia law school so expensive for in state people?

Law schools are expensive period. I am assuming that you were asking about the University of Virginia Law School. That school holds itself out as and is considered by most people to be the equal of the nation's elite private law schools. So the tuition reflects that. If you are an in state resident the cost is still less than the cost of going to say, Columbia Law School (like 8K less per year).

People have been enrolling in these schools if accepted because coming out of these programs it is relatively easy to get jobs that pays six digits. But the hiring model of the nation's largest firms is severely being tested in this recession.

I did not know Asylee do get financial aid!... that is so good to know.
....LOL..
Law schools are expensive.... and the school you are refering to, though not that ranked very high with its undergrad counterparts, they do hold a much higher ranking for its law program, so yeah they fare just about right with other prestigious law schools.
If you have the resources,,, private schools are usually better for law schools.... too many lawyers out there, so the weding factor sometimes boils down to graduating instituition and law firm association.
......Hey if law does not work out.... Medicine is always lucrative.......lol....
Good luck.

OMG, this kind of questions make us asylees feel like aliens. Can we go to law school? Of course, we can do anything we want, we're just normal people.

Instate Tuition Question

Thankful,
I am also applying to Grad school to do a Masters in Teaching. Do you know what the rules are for Asylees with regards to instate tuition? I applied and was told I need to live in the state for 1 year before I can get instate cost. By any stretch do you think that if you lived in the state out of status before getting asylum if that time can count towards your state residency?

Your residency does not have anything to do with your status. Atleast here in New York, if you are an eligible immigrant or non-immigrant all you need is 12 months of residency proof like 12 continous bank statements. I was out of status for 8 years. After I got asylum, I applied to college and I was eligible for resident tuition rate and I was eligible for financial aid.

Could someone give me some details on the requirements regarding eligibility for in-state tuition? I'm contemplating on moving to California or staying in Midwest after graduation. I wish to go to Cali eventually though and I'm also looking to apply for grad schools in Cali.

Each state has different rules. In some states you can count the time when you were out of status but others they count from the date you acquired a lawful eligible status.

In-state tuition and asylees

Thanks a lot to all that responded. I am also in NY. I have another question though. Does TAP in NY count residency from the time you get a legal status? I applied and they said I don't have enough time in NY but I was a bit scared to mention that I was here before because I don't know if it will come back to bite me in any way later. What do you all think?

In my case that was not the case. Maybe laws have changed recently. I was granted asylum in January 2007 and I applied for financial aid a few months later and got without a problem. Before being granted asylum, I was out of status for 11 years in NYC. The only problem I face is about the Selective Service.

Hi,
I'd just like to know how you got your financial aid via FAFSA;
the point is I've been qualified as a dependent and my parents had filed a foreign tax return instead of 1040 so .... I'm like confused because i've already received letter frm HESAA of NJ stated im ineligible for financial aid for the state of NJ because my parent are not legal residents....(im pretty sure because i stated foreign tax returned, so....)
thanks

Your question is confusing. Why did your parents file foreign tax returns? Where do they live? What is your family's immigration status?

They live in US with me, they're Asylees too, But we came together in 2008 so, at that time they were supposed to filed an Income tax return from the country. so when filling my Fafsa 2009-2010 i put ''foreign tax income return'' because it's what they filed or will file.....????
Or else what we've to do.
thanks.

Did they file a tax return in the US too? Do they work here? You need to correct your FAFSA as soon as possible if you want to receive financial aid. I suggest that you find someone who help you with the process because (no offense but) you do not understand it too well.

Yes, I don't understand it well
The point is they don't work in US yet. So they didn't file a tax return in US
they only receive income from my mom's Law office in the country.
