A friend wants to know if he can immediately visit Canada, within a few days, after he arrives for the first time as a US immigrant? He plans to just spend a few days in Canada to visit his relatives.

I think it will be wise for you to get your greencard and probably your ssn before travelling to canada. You should be able to get these in three weeks after entering the U.S.It's just a suggestion.

I agree with austingolduk. Your friend better wait for the green card and then travel. I am not even sure he can travel now since he's only a stamp in the passport. He needs a GC for traveling purposes withing the NA continent.

Such a visit should not cause a ripple on either side of the border.

Thanks for the answers. I'll advice him to at least apply for SSN and maybe check the local ins office before departing for Canada. Assuming that he gets a temporary SSN or maybe a letter from the SSN office that he did apply for one and left for Canada, will he have any problems when he comes back to the US?

He doesn't need the SSN - the immigrant visa should suffice for re-entry.
