I was out for nine months and didn't have a problem, although I only admitted to being out for 4.

This is a common scenario and completely unwise to do. What if they send you to secondary inspection for any reason and discovered you lied; you will make a U turn to taking the same flight back with no GC.

At the time I made the decision to lie I was under the impression that returning after being out for more than 6 months would have resulting in losing the GC as well, so I figured I had nothing to lose. It was quite nerve wracking though.

But question is would it jeopardize his/her citizenship in future?

Of course being caught for lying to an immigration official will jeopardize the chances for citizenship.

I crossed a land border via airplane, and my GC was not scanned.

I could only feel the guilt after he handed my passport back and the sense of terror subsided.
