After getting mother's Green card

I was trying to find information related to anything that needs to be done after getting Green Card for parents, but didn't find anything on that topic. My mother will not be working. Do I need to apply for Social Security Number for her? Is it necessary to apply or optional? Can I claim her as a dependent on my tax return? If yes, then does she need SSN or TIN? Any inputs on this will be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

it's free and pretty much everybody has SSN in the US. what's the problem with applying for it? It's very hard to get around without it.

if she is your dependent, then yes, you can claim her as one.

GC holders are eligible for number but not necessarily benefits. If your father will be working, she should be his dependent as she may be able to get health insurance from his employer, and you will not be able to get it for her from your employer. There are generally far more benefits for spouses than for parents. If neither are working, you need to be looking for health insurance for them at this time.

if they are over 65 still dont they get Medicare for free?
