Does CIS accept copies of the electronically fied tax returns? I have been filing my tax returns electronically, through TurboTax, and I can print out copies of my returns from the website.

I called 1-800-829-1040, only thing is that you should dial 3 instead of 2-2-SSN-1-1... mentioned in other post on page 1. So it's like 3-SSN-1-1 to get to the transcript part. Only 2005 - 2007 are available. I will send 2003 and 2004 request in fax.
 
1040 vs transcripts

Before I got my green card I got an RFE to produce last 2 years of tax transcripts. All I did is send my copies of 1040. That was ok to get my gc approval. So why now this will be any different.

Call customer service and they will tell you which form to fill. You can't request transcripts for more than 3 years back without filling a form and mailing it to the IRS; it is still a free service.

I received a letter from IRS saying that they were not able to provide the trancripts for the year 2003 and 04. It is available only for current year and 3 years back.

That's strange... I received my transcripts using the same method. Take that letter with you and copies of your return to the interview.
 
I need 2004 transcripts and am not able to get it. I faxed the request before for 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. I will call the 1-800 number today and try ....
 
I just got off the phone with a representative. Here is what she said:

Tax transcript, which is a line by line of the 1040 is available for current and past 3 years (no surprises there)
Tax account transcript is available for upto 10 years. this is a summary only with AGI and deductions and filing status etc.

I told her that this is for Naturalization purposes. She said that she is aware of the requirements, but unfortunately only past 3 years transcripts are available. The USCIS preferes tax transcripts as they show the refund or tax paid details, but in case that we cannot produce it, then tax account transcript is just acceptable. She also suggested that I take the 1040 copy that I have to substantiate.

She even waited to confirm that I got the fax copy of the 2004 account transcript! Which I did.
 
I was able to order only for 3 years. 2005,6,7. For 2003 and 2004, automated system says I need to send a form to request photocopy of the returns. I will try to talk to a rep tomorrow.
 
I was following this thread for some time. Just to get some peace of mind I decided to get tax transcripts to take with me to the interview.

I walked into the IRS office in downtown Chicago (230 S Dearborn St, 24th floor), and got printouts of Tax Transcripts for 2007, 2006 and 2005, and Account Transcripts for 2004 and 2003.

All for free and 45 minutes waiting time. Drivers license and SSN card was required.
 
That is a great information Prithis. I will try the same. Do you know whether I can go to any of the local offices?

I am not sure about that. I googled "IRS office Chicago" and got 3 offices listed. I called the phone numbers of each, and none had the option to speak to an agent. I just decided to take a chance with one of the offices which was close to my workplace, and it did work out.

By the way, I have read on this forum that someone else too has been able to get transcripts at an IRS local office by walking in.
 
I got the transcripts until 2003. It was pretty quick. I didnt have to wait at all. The receptionist was very nice. She processed my request rightaway though there were several people with tokens waiting. I was out in like 10 minutes.

You are welcome Helpmen400. Which one you got Tax Transcripts or Account Transcripts?

You should be able to get Tax Transcripts for 2005-2007, which are more detailed.

Account Transcripts, which are summarized, are available for 2003 and 2004.

However I read on this forum that Account Transcripts should be fine too.

Thank for the number to get Transcripts...

Here are steps and options I followed....(may be useful to be very clear on options)
1 - Called: 800.829.1040
2 - Stay there to go to English Menu !!! - don't know Spanish - Sorry Amigo(s)
3 - Choose 2 - Information about Account…blah..blah
4 - Choose 2 - Questions on Tax account
5 - Asks for SSN - ENTER SSN - 1 to confirm Type SSN - Then 1 to confirm your SSN
6 - 7 Options available - Choose 3 for Transctipts
7 - Asked to Verify the address of your last return - House Number only (NUMBER) - I already filed 2008 and with the same address - Not sure what if your previous return and where you want your returns to be sent are different!!!
8 - It says 10 Transctipts can be ordered at once - other blah..blah…blah… info about Transcripts and copies… It says only 6 years are available
9 - Out of 4 options available I picked 4 for Transctipt of Account & Transctipt of Tax Return (why not get both if they are providing for free!) - This is important!!!
10 - Started with 2008 - 1 to verify Year - 1 to verify what you picked - It says it will take 10-15 to receive
11 - picked 2 to Order same Transctipts - repeated the above step (step 10) for 2007, 2006, 2005 - same message. And, when I am at 2004, it says only Account Transctipt is available and will be sent and can order copy of tax return for a fee and give option to get that form to you! - picked 2 to say No and to repeated for another year 2003. When I tried for 2002 it said transcripts for 2002 are not available.
12 - Hung Up

Lets wait and see when I will get it and what…hope I don't have to say anything else to confirm my selections at the end - I just hung up! - any idea?

Also, Hope they will send all the requested ones to the same address on the latest return - hope they will not go to my previous addresses!!! - anybody knows that for sure?
