I believe all opinions given are only guidance and not rules by USCIS. I switched two jobs so far after GC with the first one 15 months after GC. I dont think there is anything to worry about.
I think a good idea would be to contact your local senator
and send the senator's office all your approvals and other forms and request them to communicate with USCIS.

Just to make sure it appears in the search later, my friend came back into US without any trouble. She had the I20 marked, Receipts of fees paid and registration for the next semester, financial support information but it seems like she was waved in without any...
Although not really my business..but when you hear stuff like this..
you start wondering why life is all about us and not about anyone else. H1s are very scarce and getting one by itself is a dream come true for many..

My two cents..
Think of Visa as a key to the house. Think of I-20 and other documents as validity while staying in the house. If you go out and come back again after your visa expiry, your I-20 may not help you. Either way I would check USCIS guidelines or a good lawyer.
