I got my 485 approved without FP being renewed. See my signature.

Sometimes they send the FP notice when they're ready to work on your case.
So there are no hard and fast rules.

I'm surprised to hear you say that. Since it's for a future job offer, he doesn't need to do squat till the 485 actually gets approved. Even after that, there is no explicit rule saying that he needs to take up the job.

Wait to see what they're asking for and submit the docs requested. As simple as that.

At this point, you can't really do much as they haven't sent an RFE or revocation letter.
But it'll be wise to expect some sort of scrutiny from USCIS and try to be prepared to file a response which will prove that yours is a bona fide...
If your company is sending you on official business to India, that's perfectly legal. No issues. Work related travel is bona fide.
If they revoke your H1, it *could* trigger an RFE for your 485.
Also, H1 and 485 are independent of each other. H1 is for present and 485 is for future. So...
Postponing FP is ok, though you can't be sure of when they'll give you the next date.
Technically you should be permitted to enter the country, as long as your AP is valid.
Also AP doesn't give you the status, it's your pending I-485. Hence the AP expiring two days after entry doesn't mean that...
