Question After Getting Citizenship

Apply for the passport first. If you visit the SS office too soon after the oath (less than 2-3 weeks), they might say they can't update your status because USCIS hasn't sent them an update for you, and you'll need to return another day. But when you apply for the passport there is no problem like that even if you apply the same day right after the oath.

But bear in mind that they take away the naturalization certificate when you apply for the passport, mailing it back to you after the passport is issued. So if you need the certificate for other things like renewing your driver's license or registering to vote, take care of that first before you apply for the passport.

SS will update your status based on the certificate of naturalization you present them. USCIS doesn't send SS any updates, so if an SS agent says it's too early to be done that's BS.

I did it in following order. In my case name change was involved. First stop after oath photo copy nc and name change doc.( don't listen to BS you cannot photocopy. Make it B&W.) Next stop DMV. Got new DL in just one hour ( same validity) . In IL things were fast unlike CA you wait ages to get DL. That too in the regime of tainted Guv!!!!!

Next stop SS office. In and out 30 minutes. They took my old card and new card will be mailed in 2 weeks ( name change). Got it within 10 days. Last stop Post Office. As i had new DL with name change everything is fast. Simple dude.

Bobsmyth is right - the SSA cannot refuse to process your request just because it is not reflected in the USCIS system yet. Just in this case, an applicant will have to wait several weeks to receive the card (happened to me).

Do we need to visit DMV if there is no name change? My SS card doesn't have "work with permit etc"...should I still go to SS office and update?

Actually, yes. Even if there are no restrictions listed on your your actual physical social security card itself, your status is still listed as an LPR in the SSA computer system. More and more businesses&employers are using E-Verify, and any kind of a mismatch (even if it is LPR vs citizen) generated by E-Verify will eventually cause some problems. So it's better to update your status with the SSA to that of a U.S. citizen.
Also, after you receive a U.S. passport, you should update your I-9 information with your employer.
