entering usa via visa waiver program for 3 months

hi guys. a friend is bout to travel to the usa and doesnt get on the net at all so thought id do him the fav.

he is an aust citizen n australia have the vwp for toursit visa for entry to the usa. he is going for the full 90 days. what documents etc would he need to make sure he doesnt run into any strife at the POE in the usa?? how much cash on hand would be advised combined with his return flights n visa n debit cards?? he has booked a weeks accom n has the checkin details then plans on hitting craigslist.org for cheaper accom for the remainder of the stay

If asked (and ONLY if asked.....he should NEVER volunteer information if it is not asked for)....he should be able to prove significant ties to his own country (ie mortgage/rent papers, a letter from employer/school stating when he is due back, car rental payments etc......basically anything that shows he is going to return back home to Australia at the end of his visit.
 
Confirmed return ticked is the least he needs to carry. In addition to that, a little cash and a few credit cards should do the trick. These should be shown only when asked for, as Elcupacabras has stated.

yeah he needs to apply online for the travel visa the agent said. no definatelt no crime record etc. how much would u suggest as a little cash? he has a visa card, a debit card and was thinking 3000 usd on person or would that much cash raise suspicion of dodgeness? he isnt planning to use travellers chqs just visa n cash
 
$3000 in the bank (take a bank statement) would be fine. In cash? Sure, but that's a lot of money to be carrying around. Where would he keep it while in the US? On his person??
