Hi everyone,

I'm a political asylee and I got my green card about a year ago. I'm originally from Peru and I want to travel to India to attend my boyfriend's sister wedding in a couple of months. I don't think I have enough time to ask for a refugee travel document. I want to use my Peruvian passport to travel. It is still valid.

My question is, in Peru you use both your mom's and dad's last name, so my Peruvian passport has two last names. However, my green card only has my dad's last name, since in the US, you only use one last name. I was wondering if I will have any troubles when I'm reentering the country since my passport and GC don't match completely.

Has anyone experienced this? any thoughts would be greatly appreciated? :)

Thank you so much. This message board has been very helpful!

Yes you need to have your GC & passport match or you will have some troubles.

wantmygcnow,,,how are you doing? i know you are a moderator here and have a lot of experience thanks for that...but i'm latino background and i have the same ve_blur's situation...but i traveled with my national passport and my green card and no problem at all...the most important is to show your green card and the visa for the country that you gonna visit in this case INDIA..cause she is permanent resident from peru..peruvians need a visa to travel to india..just go to the indian embassy close to you with your boyfriend..get your visa and have a great trip..trust me...no problems at all,,

in my case, my middle is missing on my GC but not on passport, but I never had any problem. If you dont have trouble boarding a plane in India, In USA, you can explain to IO, in case asked why there is difference.
Nowadays, no one can board a plane going to USA with a fake GC. If they let you in, then you're ok.

DHS has this new initiative where they will even NOT allow US travelers whose names don't exactly match their IDs. For example if you put on your ticket "Jon L Smith" and your full name, as shown in your ID is "Johnathan Larry Smith", they will not allow you to board even on a domestic US flight. International rules are obviously way more strict.

So I think it will be a bad idea and you would potentially have trouble.

Yes, I was thinking to buy my airfare ticket with my complete name, since I can use my passport to get through security and both names would match. I think the only problem would be when I want to re enter the US.
Hmm I wonder if it will help to carry more documents, like my birth certificate and my application for the green card?

What are you talking about? he is not talking about visa. He is saying his name is not correct on his NP. Its common sense to have alll document match what you have in hand...

y don't you get this fixed? It may not hurt you now and you may be ok in entering the country..but sooner than later somoene will notice and make a big deal about it.

yes, the problem is that I live in the midwest and my consulate is in Boston. It takes 3 months to get your passport alone. They send it from Peru. Also, when you do your passport, they take it from your peruvian identification, and that is with my full name. I might have to do another document to fix that  and I want to travel in December! I want to fix it afterward though!
I can't wait till I can apply to citizenship and I don't have to worry about this :)

Don't even worry about it, my NP has 3 last names and my first name, and my GC has only my last name and my first name, and i did many trips with those documents and i never had a problem, the last time at the POE, the IO didn't even opened my passport, all he did was to swipe my GC.

Thank you! I have one more question. when you ask for visa, they usually want a copy of your GC. I was thinking that this extra last name thing might not be a problem. But just to be safe, have you ever encountered a problem?

Not at all, last time i requested a visa from the french embassy, they had both my GC and my passport, they only thing that matters was to have at least one of your last name and first name matching with the one used in your GC, at the end they put all my last names in my visa since these are the ones i have in my passport.once again,my GC has only one of my last names;and we all know french consulate personnel are one of the rudest in the world.you should be fine.

Can you ammend your information with CIS? Can you ask them to add the names to your GC? Why didn't they do that in the first place? No space? If they WILL fix it, then you can travel with a stamp in your passport instead.

That's a good idea.
I think it was the fault of my first lawyer (which by the way, was horrible). He was the one who just put only one last name at the start of everything, when we first applied to political asylum. Things just stayed that way. I'll see what I have to do to fix it in the future.

Well, if you only had one last name with CIS from the beginning, it's not their fault, so I don't think they'll fix it.

*sigh* I see what happens and report back! I only have a couple of years left to apply for citizenship and hopefully this wont be a problem anymore :)

thank you so much everyone for your comments!
