In the N400 form, page 4 Section C, list all trips outside the US, I need to calculate the number of days I was outside the US. There was one trip that was just barely under 6 months, but since some months are 31 days, it comes to 180 days. Is there a guideline as to how you count the number of days outside the US for the purposes of filling out the N400?

Do you include or exclude the day of departure and day of return?

I heard that there was an online calculator where one can enter the dates and it will could the number of days for you? Anyone know where this is?

I did call USCIS and ask them this - they would not answer in terms of number of days but simply read the relevant text referring to the duration of 6 months.

Calculating all my absense days over the last 5 years was the most challenging part of the entire application. Good luck to you, my friends.. I believe the exact numbers don't really matter, as long as they are in the right ball-park. The most important thing is that you are smiling and confident when they question you.. :)

Just remember, even trips of just under 180 days can lead to questions about continuous residency. For example, if your calculations come up to 178 days there's a good chance the IO will ask what the purpose of your trip was and if you maintained a residence in US.
