Surrender of Green Card

I noticed on a few threads there is mentioning of GC at the interview. I work as a flight attendant on international routes. If they take my green card, I cannot work.

Is there anyway around this or am I mistaken? I am in Atlanta so I would most likely be interviewed there.

Are you talking about the naturalization interview? If so, your GC is only taken away the day you become a US citizen right before the oath ceremony.

You have to surrender your green card at the oath ceremony, not the interview. At that point you will need to get a US passport before traveling out of the country since the US requires by law that its citizens use a US passport for entry to the country regardless of what other valid passports they hold.

If I read you correctly then, I cannot work/travel until I get that passport? How fast can that take place?

Yes you read that correctly. It takes one week or two weeks if you pay an extra fee to expedite the process.

You can also get the passport the same day or the next day if you go to a Passport Office to apply in person. However, there is no such office in Atlanta. The closest one is in Miami, Florida.

You can get a passport in a day or two when you make an appointment at the nearest passport agency. You will have to pay the expedite fee of $60 in addition to the regular passport fee. Passport agency will collect your naturalization certificate and return it to you along with the new US passport.

You should make the appointment several days in advance of your oath date and plan to go there directly after oath ceremony.
