One Year Later, USCIS STILL not finished hiring

See the ad below from http://www.ilw.com/immigdaily/digest/2008,0514.shtm (also on USAJOBS). This is absolutely outrageous.

On April 2, 2008, Michael Chertoff testified to congress that the new fee schedule had enabled USCIS to hire 1,500 immigration officers to improve processing times. At the time, he said that "more than 869" had already been hired. The more than 500 below are presumably the rest of them.

This means that, a full year after the fee increase was officially announced, they have just begun accepting applications for more than a third of the new officers. By the time they finish hiring and training, it will have been more than a full year since the fee increase was actually implemented.

As for the "more than 869" already hired, based on goings-on at NYC DO we have reason to believe that most of these have just finished their training and are starting now!

When USCIS announced the fee increase last year, they also stated that they would review and adjust the fee structure every two years. In other words, by the time they sort out the backlog mess, and quite possibly before, they will already be announcing the next fee increase.

During that testimony, one of the senators (can't remeber his name right now) said that Mr. Gonzalez has failed to hire any (not even one) of the retired ajudicators as at the day of the hearing (Apr 2). Mr. Chertoff had no idea that was happening and could not provide a response. These group of employees will not require any training and would have stepped right in and straight to work.
One more reason why Mr. Gonzalez really needs to go.

Doesn't that make him a retired annuitant? Maybe Chertoff will "rehire" him and force him to deal with the backlog personally.

I doubt he retired voluntarily. Employees at his level are usually given the opportunity to "resign", in order to avoid bad publicity coming from both sides. I'm pretty sure that Chertoff gave Gonzalez the old heave-ho after he failed to live up to any of the promises that he used to justify the fee hike.

Or he couldn't pass up a lucrative private sector job offer. See my recent post. Looks like he decided to get out of USCIS before the crap really hit the fan.

Well of course it is hard to hire people. I mean it must be very difficult to get disinterested , clueless people to work for 30k.

i would gladly work, as i have degree and all, and sadly 30K is a lot of money for me after all the education i got :-( but i need citizenship for that.

Maybe it's worth applying anyway. Anybody who frequents this forum would have a better understanding of USCIS processes than the average job applicant. And the added bonus that background check is already done! Then negotiate for a low salary, and say, the only thing missing is my citizenship... expedite that, and I'm your man!

They start out at 30k and may go as high as 50k which is not very bad.
For those that are retirees, congress made a special provision for this particular group of people such that they will not lose their pension if they go back to work. In other words thery will be paid for the working and will still recieve their pension. Normally you cannot do that, although I think it is restricted to if you work for the federal government.
So no particular reason for them not to work unless the work environment is not condusive which takes us back to beginning: BAD ADMINISTRRATION!!!

i actually tried to apply, but it requires to answer "yes" to "Are you US Citizen?" and that is one reason to deny me naturalization. I guess i will just wait and look for job some place else :(

Unfortunately USCIS hired people only that can breath only with out realizing that they have to perform as well....

Well, if you think they (USCIS) don't hire people simply because they're too bureaucratic, think again.

The ppl at the top (from Chertoff down) are nothing but skimmers of public money into private hands.

What they do is squeeze the public money till the last drop, giving pink slips to public servants, and at the same time, outsourcing whatever possible into the hands of private
companies.

P.S. By the way, "Chertoff" means "Son-of-Satan" in Russian ("Satan" is called "Chert" in Russia and other Slavic lands; "****off" means "son of *****", ibid). Nothing personal.

You are absolutely correct. I always found that last name humorous.
