are those the same procedures?
if not, what are the dfferences?

one of my friends who has also applied for cit ship tells me that if some one's GC name check went smoothly, the N400 name check should also go well, as it is the same procedure...
is he right?

Actually, in their ever expanding quest to slow down applications and delay adjudication as long as humanly possible USCIS re-does all the GC checks for the N-400. If you had trouble with your name check for the GC, you will have the same delay/trouble again, except this time they will wait for the result and not adjudicate after 180 days.

My GC process went pretty smooth and fast, IIRC.
was about 2 months earlier that projected at the time...so hopefully, this time it will go ok too..

Thanks, btw. I will let my friend know what you said.

I disagree. My GC namecheck was done in under a day my N-400 took almost a year.

It might be same now; however, they have made changes to GC name check... they cannot delay more than 180 days in background check for GC (not sure if this has been implemented now).

High-level procedures are the same. Check this post

However, N400 name check (NC) has a different code and can be distinguished from GC NC. That gives USCIS/FBI a flexibility to do it differently, if they want to.

IMHO, the whole process defies logic. If your name has at least one hit, you cannot estimate how long NC will take. And the database is growing, so your N400 NC is more likely to produce a hit. On top of that there is no established queue that's why it's impossible to predict anything.
