Hello there! :)
Im having troubles filling my college application because im a political asylee and I was wondering if you could help me with that :D :o

I was recently granted political asylum, therefore I don't have US residency yet (Im going to apply for it in a year) but I DO have social security.
So my question is if I am not a US citizen and I dont have permanent residency (or greencard) should I fill my application as an international student?

Thanks for helping me! :)

Hi,

It depends of the State you are applying for it (college). All I know for personal experience, in Florida, in order to pay as an IN-State estudent, you must have at least one (1) year of continuing residing. You can prove that with a driver license, car registration or utility bill. In other words a legal paper that state your name and a 1 year before day. Here is a link that direct you to the form you will be required to fill:

http://www.broward.edu/stuserv/forms/reg-002.pdf

However. despite of the 1 year of residing in the state, you must have soemthign to proof that you are legal in this country. Lucky you that already have that!.

Good luck. and keep us informed!
(and when you enroll to college as an In--state student, be proud about that!, I'm telling you 'cause I have to pay as an Out-state student until I get the I-130 approved, so please enjoy it!!!:D )

You should not apply as an international student. I am also in the same boat. I was granted asylum in Jan 2007. I just started college last week here in New York. I also received financial aid both federal and state. If you have resided in your state for 12 months continous, you can apply for residency which is beneficial because your tuition fees will reduce quite a bit. You need to contact the college to inquire about their residency requirement.

is it true that you have to pay taxes for at least the last 3 years to get financial aid?

I never heard of that. Financial aid is determined by the income you fill in the 1040 tax form. Issues I faced was I was randomly chosen for verification and I had never applied for Selective Services. Therefore, I had to send in copies of my 1040 to my college, obtain a letter from Selective Services and also explain why I did not register with Selective Services. Go to this website, www.fafsa.ed.gov. It gives detail about applying for financial aid.

Some application forms have a category for asylees/refugees. If they do not, I would hand write on the form: "Asylum Granted."

Do not check international student or permanent resident.

I agree with Thankful. I made the mistake of checking international student when I already had asylum and had to then prove that I do not require an F-1 to attend the university. So I agree - definitely let them know that this status allows you to attend college without additional authorization from USCIS. The office of International students at the University should know that.

No. You are immediately eligible upon receiving a grant of asylum

But it's not always the case with FAFSA. It takes them some time to verify your eligability through DHS. So if you applied for financial aid right after your asylum was granted there can be a bit of delay.

They now have this so-called automated secondary verification so it should be prompt.
