Hi guys!

I've received the EAD a couple of days ago, so today I went to get a replacement SS card, because the one I had got lost.. Anyways I went to the local SS office, and tried getting a new card. She asked me for some documents, so I showed her my EAD, and passport, and a couple of other things. The lady came back and said my I-94 is expired and immigration might deny this request. Now, I am in the middle of the process for the GC, so I am adjusting my status. Do you think that immigration is gonna cause a problem now? I mean the only reason I need a SS is because I need to renew my license. This whole thing is causing me a huge problem, because I need a DL in order to work. What do you guys think?? Please help!!

Ask to see a supervisor at the Social Security Office. the USCIS has already approved your request by issuing you with a EAD. You are entitled to a replacement card with the appropriate endorsements.

BTW, you should not need to show a social security card to renew your license. The DMV validates your SS # before renewal.

Just fill out the License renewal form.

Well the thing is I live in NJ which is the worst state for issuing any kind of document, so when renewing the license you need to show the EAD along with the SS card which sucks. But to go back to what you said, EAD should be proof enough for the SSA to jsut give me the replacement card. I don't know what to do...

The lady came back and said my I-94 is expired and immigration might deny this request.

She's obviously clueless about immigration. Tell her to submit the request anyways, and if not ask to speak to her supervisor. Make sure you bring your I-485 receipt to prove that you are in legal status - the EAD alone is not proof of that.

No she told me "I'm gonna have to contact immigration about this" so I said fine, there is no problem with that. So now I have to wait for the immigration to review the documents I gave her. But I shouldn't wait though.. I need to get the DL as soon as possible. I am just so frustrated about this. I don't know if I should go tomorrow again and submit my I-485
receipt.

You can try, but once the verification process is started I doubt if SSA will stop it. They still need to verify that the I-485 is still pending. I suspect you will need to wait.

Sorry to disturb this topic but I have a similar question. My SSN is in my maiden name and I filed my I-485 package in my after marriage name. So can I change my last name on SSN showing my EAD card? Last time I went to SSN office to change the last name with I-485 Receipt and marriage certificate, they told me come after my immigration is complete. But I need to work, so would different name create a problem in my starting the new job? Or I can get it changed easily?

Any response is appreciated!
Thanks
Neha

Your interview date is 2 1/2 weeks away. why don't you wait till then and after approval then go for a change of SS card.

If you need to work in the meantime, show your EAD to your prospective employer, that should suffice.

you can start working at any time. If your official name is already your married name, you just tick a special box on form W-4 when they hire you.

EAD does let you work, but the problem with me is that I need a license in order to get to work, and I am stuck waiting again... That's what people don't understand.. In US if you don't have a driver's license, you're basically screwed
