Worried! H1b Revalidation

:( Iam currently on H1B with visa valid till July 31 2002. I switched jobs last year and have an I-797 with validity till 04/2004. I just got back from a trip to Canada and the immigration officer gave me a New I-94 during re-entry valid till 04/2004. However, he did not put in new dates on my visa itself. I was expecting him to scratch the old company name and expiration date on the visa and input new ones.
Thinking about it now the following are my questions:
1. If I leave the country for travel to India after July 31, 02 and give up my I-94 to the airline, what happens when I try to come back in; since the visa would have expired?
2. Did the immigration officer not do what he should have and if YES, is there some wy of calling up the authorities here and getting it rectified?

Please let me know.

Thanks.

actually

U can go out of US hand out the wrong I94 and come back in get a new I94 to fix the error. It is upto you to check all these things.
U can also try to go to that POE and try to fix the error. See INS site , forms link for I94 error fixing. Some local INS entertain I94 corrections.

i think he was right

when you go out of the country and come back, the I-94 is updated, the border post cannot issue a visa or extend the visa. exyending the visa on the passport needs to be done at the consulate or at St.louis

Thanks Jaxen and Sanjna.
If I read it correctly (based on Sanjna's response) the immigration officer did the right thing. There is no error with my I-94. It has the name and validity of my latest I-797 from my current company. So no need to rectify (or try to) my I-94.
As I understand it, the visa needs to be revalidated/updated either at my home consulate/3rd country consulate or by sending it to MO and not during re-entry.
