Working on EAD

Can a principle candidate work as a independent contractor to a different company on EAD after completion of 6 months of applying for I-485 with sponsor?

Or

An (any) employer is required even after completing 180 days with sponsor?

Employment is the major requirement. As long as the contract with the client says that the job is similar to the one GC is applied for and the job offer is permanent , you should be able to convince INS. You better hire a lawyer.
personally based on the types of job/salary available for contractors, I doubt that you will be able to convince INS.

Question For Jaxen(working on EAD)

If i am working on EAD, do i need to inform the company that is processing my GC? What would be the procedure for filing taxes? Is there a restriction on the income that i make from Working on EAD with respect to the income from my primary job?

Not necessary. No changes in the way tax returns are filed. No restriction on total income. One of the jobs you are doing better match the one described in LC/140. Responsibilities, salary and title are important in that order.
