Why the Tax Return is needed?

For EB 485 application, why we have to supply our tax return for the previous years? Do they just want to make sure we actually file tax every year, or they want to know we file the correct tax? They are not IRS or tax specialists after all.

Last time I checked, tax returns were not required as part of the I-485 package.

It is not required with initial application. It may be required as an additional information later on to check if you are in the same job or not. Nothing to do with you filled taxes correctly or not. They also may need a copy of tax form filled along with W-2.
