This is what comes to my mind.

I am sure they will not take off the Per country limit. Unless and untill this is done there will no be huge improvement.

Does Frist's Bill remove the quota?

Home country is always going to be a backup.........and for those in IT.....i just got good news....its really booming right now....people with 4-5 years exp can expect upto rs.8 lacs as pay package......

but since we are here and we have already spent so much time building our life....why not try for another 2-3 years to see if we can get GC

Besides, I wanna add, the money in India is not Indian. They are American Dollars(Or some other forms of Foreign currency) but not indian rupees. The boom is shallow. Unless there is serious development in infrastructure, and India being able to generate money from all kinds of industry, all the hype you see can disappear fast.

There is lot of fuss made about lack of infrastructure. it does not impact IT at all cause once the person gets into the work space, thats it, the churning goes on. Thats why i feel India will continue to attract enough invenstment in IT thro outsourcing and off shoring.

i agree - india is rocking

I agree. India is a really good option now. Therefor i have not even bought an house here. Just to keep myself free of any obligations is i decide to leave. When i think about my 2 year daughter, staying in india is going to be 1000 times better socially.
+ This is a good way to teach lesson to uncle sam. Their GC policies are only going to take talent away from them - so let them feel a pinch. Perhaps thats how unle sam learns ( see the pinch they are getting in Iraq).
+ I dont know about you , but Most of the americans around me are jerks. I dont have to take them any more.
Cheers.

Growth in India related to IT market is great. It provides you better knowledge and more saving potential. Life style of India is also improved with cost. One can see even working 10 years in US it is difficult to imagine to buy a house in Delhi or any big cities.

In India there is a big gap between rich and poor and lack of basic infrastructure. Govt needs to build the structure and fill the gap to keep the growth other wise it may lead to more chose and not a place to leave in.

If I compare current situation from most of the developing countries, there are hundred of reasons why to leave in India and hope most of IT prof. must be convinced by it.

Goan2005,

I worked in India for about 10 years before I came down here... Well I agree India has become quite big attraction ... but it all depends where U get Urself placed over there...

Well are U a Goan ... ? Nice place man ... I stayed in Panjim for 2 years and enjoyed every bit there ...

I beleive that if you have an advanced degree and expert in some area [both are required] ... then it might be good in India.. You will land up in a nice paying job... at home U have servants, drivers to take U around, your spouse need not do household chores, no bathroom cleaning, no lawn cutting, snow removal, no grocery shopping...So many plus.
My friend who was Phd and left for India 2 years back, he become a CEO of a med size company... He is getting good pay pack. When he gets up in the morning, the bathroom is kept ready, clothes are all ready to go, hot breakfast is on the table and his secretary joins in every morning for the breakfast meeting. Driver is ready with nice cool car and the door is kept open by another person. Servants to take care of kids and cook food ... wife at enjoying life too .. at kitty parties almost 2 days a week.

Wow .... nice comfortable life.

I do not think life is all that good for an average IT worker or an engineer... For an average guy I think life is good out here .... My friend in Mumbai makes around 13 lakhs a year ... but he lives so far from work .. that he needs to take that local train.... and U know how it is to travel every day in that rush.. even though he travels first class ... life is not easy there.

In my 10 years out there, I did not like some things :
1> Rampant corruption in every aspect of life, even to gets Ur kids into the school ... U need to pay Ur way through.

2> Almost no ethics and moral values in people. The pressure of population has made people stressed out in all direction.. The resources have become so little in comparision to population that ... people are forgotten something called morality.

3> Employer almost treat the employee likes slaves.. They just do not care.

4> Large scale politics in the office.

5> One of friend argued that he might find India better for his kids to grow up... but it all depends .... a peek inside the school -- its all much different than 10 years back.

6> Every thing is a struggle over there for a average person -- to get kids into school .. u need to take atleast 3 days off... to get house permit ... U need to run to the permit office for atleast 3-4 months. To get a D/L U need to plead with the officer... Well U can buy your way thru too.

Goan,
Buddy, is it necessary to put down someone to show yourself in good light!!

I have an egineering degree from IT, MBA from a very good school in US and for the last 7 years (9 if you include education), I am slugging out here. It has been a very sad and dissappointing experience, but then lets keep the perspective.

1.Americans around you are Jerk!!, give me a break, unless you work with jail inmates it would be hard to justify that statement. You have to appreciate what is good with Americans (compared mainly to us). They have better soft skills (which is very much needed at management levels). They still retain the tech lead (wonder why American companies come out with breakthrough technologies or win more noble prize). Sure there are some jerks, but you find them everywhere. Is there a glass cieling for Indians, I feel there is in general, but I have seen many Indians rising through them (and that makes you wonder is there a glass cieling). I am sure if I had a green card and a lighter skin, I would have done better, but then no one is delibrately trying to put me down, it's a dog eat dog world, Americans have better understanding of the system and they beat us in the competition to get up the ladder. That's the real reason, not that they are jerks or what not.
2.About Irak, well it's an immigration forum, why bring politics here. But since you have, let me say this, Thanks to US, in the longer run I hope world is a more peaceful place. They being the super power (and hence a higher stake in the current world system and also the highest capablity) decided to stop a rogue country from acquiring WMD. (Or maybe it was cheaper oil). Who knows, but it does help the world of people who believe in democarcy and commerce. More power to Bush. I doubt he has any role in delaying our GC, lets not connect that dot, he has been good to US and also to India. Long live Indo-US friendship. US is making lots of sacrifices, living in there country as guests and waiting for GC (which is really at pleasure of US), let's not be mean and bad mouth them.
3.I hope India is doing well. It does not look like this nightmare will end soon. Anyone knows what is the best way about getting a good job there.

TIA
Akela

goan2005.........you sound like "sour grapes"....
how can you make a general statement.....and just because 100k people will leave does not mean uncle sam is going to suffer.......you wait and see how uncle sam increases H1b visa cap by next year......and uncle sam is already doing outsourcing so believe me you are not going to be missed......

i am really happy that i have an good alternative since india is growing, otherwise still india is 20 years behind usa (heck most of the countries are still 10 years behind usa..)
assuming that politics and bureacracy is cleaned up they are not going to see the same growth after 5 years....

there are hundred factors which makes me choose usa over india.
1. 100 times better security of personnel and property......(better cops, emergency service)
2. better housing over here...
3. taxes are not wasted.....we get a free library, free schooling etc.., better roads, clean neighborhood.
4. social security, medicare, unemployment benefits etc.....taxes at work again..
5. dont have to bribe the telephone man, or the electrician or the water supply etc..

i think i can go on...but time is a limit...

india can become a great country......if only they can fix their politicians and bureacrats....and other government officials...

This does not mean anything ... many countries are just skiping a generation in evolution in the technology ... they might leapfrog way ahead.

U should come to Detriot Man.... where the chances of getting shot is almost 10 times more than Iraq.

If you go by quality of life and best coutries to live... US does NOT come in top 10 countries in the world...

Compare Healthcare ... Costwise No 1, care wise not among the top 10.

If you say compare the internet speeds ... US is lagging way behind.... its 27th or something.

Thats how the world works now ..

If you apply for the homeloan where do U think the money came from ... well most likely it might be from the middle eastern country.

Katrina relief work .. where did the money come from ... Loan from China.

As long as we wear colored lens and disassociate ourselves from India, we will have more than 100 reasons to choose USA over India.

Agreed... Technology wise in many areas US is lacking far behind even though a majority of new technologies emerge from US. The main reason is that US got technologically advanced a long time ago. Replacing old technology with new ones is costly. On the other hand developing countries can embrace new technologies faster as they have nothing to replace.
We can see that quality of technology in public transport like subway (metro) etc will be far better in any country than the US.
Same way most of the ATM machines are backward in US.
The US celluar service is also backward, but that is mainly because they refused to embrace the GSM technology for a long time and the rest of the world did earlier.

In short the evolution of technology involes replacing old ones with new ones and it would take a 20-30 year cycle. Therefore maybe some developing countries who are just embracing technology now may get the latest and greatest, however 10 or 20 years down the line, US will again have the latest technology as they would have to and would be able to afford to replace the existing ones.

Therefore comparision of technology evolution is useless here.

Well everyone is replaceable...

Very true too....
Everyone is replacable, only the cost the company has to pay in terms of knowledge transfer, time consumed/wasted, customer satisfaction/retainment/lost may differ.

nTan said:

Very true... and you may as well add some more cities.
But these are just a few compared to the secure feeling you get at majority of places.
In India in majority of places in states like Bihar, UP, Assam you may get kidnapped, robbed, shot or raped. And offcourse in all the states the law and order and security availability depends on how much money you have and the number of politicians/cops/goonda's that you know of.
In India murder by the house servant/maid has increased 100 folds in the last decade itself. In the 90's in Delhi itself there will be atleast 3-5 cases every week.

nTan said:

Agreed too ......
But in relative comparision with India (the topic at hand), its far far far ahead.
Remember we are talking about middle class people quality of living.

nTan said:

Agreed there too.....
But you get good healtcare for the cost. US is not a welfare state.
Now compare it to India. You can surely go to goverment hospitals in India and get free treatment. But how many middle class people go to goverment hospitals. The cost for good/decent healthcare in not very low in India. But its still lower than US.
Health care is the only plus for India. For small injuries, sickness etc you dont have pay with your kidney as here. Plus you dont need a regular Medical insurance like here.
I also belong to middle class when in India but have always gone to the goverment hospital for any emergency kind of treatment and always received if not good but right care.

Where did you get this info.
Here you will get what you pay for.

So in short dont compare US with the rest of the World.
In every aspect US will lack somewhere to some country. But in a 1-1 comparision with any country in the world US will come ahead as a whole.

AMEN to that....as they say beauty is in th eyes of the beholder.

the realistic assessment is things are far better in india now than it was in say early nineties....what i don't like is people bitching either way...indians bitching about america from the standpoint of GC (getting or not getting it).

and desis here bitching about india how corrupt india is, i mean give me a break how many of us filed income tax returns when we worked in india? how many of us paid bribes to get birth certificate or marriage certificate to quickly process our case for visa and gc (if taking bribe is a crime then paying bribe is a crime) these guys come here and post as if they are "holier than others".
people do not realise they are/were part of the problem when they lived in india. i know lot of students come here to america to study and settle down, some of them are from business families, how many of these business families show proper accounts and pay taxes...(how many establishments say "sirf cash mein kaam karte hain").
all of us got education for a pittance in IITs or REC or other goverment colleges...you have to be thankful for that.

some people ,i have seen their posts they always bitch about india...dude why do you bother...if india is so bad for you, i guess you are lucky to be here in america...enjoy america and why you get so worked up when someone says india is improving and you have post and paint india in a negative way. does it create itch for you somewhere. you should be thankful for receiving education in india..if you had the same education in america you would still be paying your college tuition debts...

if anyone thinks growth in india is just about IT, then they have their heads buried in sand. you only have to read the economic journals in india to realize the changes happening on other sectors. every country needs everyother country to do something...with increased globalisation no one nation is immune to economic downturn.

GSM is just popular, may be cheaper too, but not superior. CDMA is better ins quality and has scope for further improvement.

What is that chance in India that a homicide case is solved and the actual culprit goes to jail (for 13 years)? I would say less than 2% cases are ever solved.

I wrote something yesterday to post here, but in the end did not want to rake up controversy on this board, so I just held back.

The conclusion I came is that all this new development and new ephoria generated is only postponing the eventual self destruction of India, unless someone finds a way to decrease the population.

How do you say CDMA is superior.
Can you give me some facts.
