I just remembered another interesting fact about alphabets and spellings.
An ancient writing system, the Phoenician system to be precise, had only 22 consonants in their Alaphabets and no vovels. It does not mean that the vovels weren't used in speech; it was just understood that
"Thr s n nd t pt vvls n wrds s wrds cld b rd wtht vvls bsd n cntxt"
Using this system I guess we could probably compress a written text almost 70% in some cases.
