Why did US Citizen's father get conditional green card - USCIS mistake???

I am a US citizen and sponsored my father's green card application. His I-485 was approved a couple of weeks ago. We received the Welcome Notice and it has verbiage that says the green card will be conditional and only valid for two years. Today we got the physical card in the mail and it is only valid for 2 years.

I thought only marriage related green cards can be "conditional". Why are parents getting this. Is this a mistake? If so, what's the best things to do now. My father is planning to travel in 2 weeks.

What a mess!

I've never heard of such a thing. More like mistake than any other possible issue. Is this mean you have to pay for removal again? I would try to correct it.

I would recommend making an Infopass appointment to his local USCIS office to inquiry about the 2 year conditional card and to see if his passport could be stamped. That way he might be able to send it back to them to get it corrected before he leaves.

Some other green cards, like investor green cards, can be 2-year conditional. However, somebody who applied as the parent of a US citizen definitely should not get a conditional card.

What is the category code on the GC?

The category on the card and the Welcome Notice are both CR6. I googled it and it's either for marriage related (less than 2 years) or for investors. But my father's case is just a straight forward one based on my US citizenship.

I made an infopass appointment for next week but I think the most likely answer they would give is to file the i-90. More hassles I guess. Anyone else has other suggestions???

Yes, you know they're going tell you to file I-90. So be prepared to file it with an explanation of why USCIS is wrong. However, the Infopass may enable you to find out what the underlying cause is. For example, suppose they mixed up his file with somebody else who has the same name, and that guy was applying as the spouse of a US citizen. If something like that or some other information mixup is the cause, he could have other problems later on. Is the other information on the card accurate ... middle name/initial, date of birth, country of birth?

Try to speak to the supervisor during your appointment. It is clearly a USCIS mistake.
