Who can translate documents needed?

I am wondering who can translate documents in other languages into English. Does it have to be a professional translator?

I understand that I cannot translate my own documents and it has to be a third party to do it, but this third party can it be just anybody who speaks both languages?

I read somewhere, but not sure where that any person with knowledge of both languages can translate and certify that the translation is accurate by signing it.

Anybody has good information about this? In our case all our papers are in English except my birth certificate and my police certificate which are in Spanish.

Will appreciate any help in this matter.

You need to have a International birth certificate which already be in several languages and English is one of them. My friend had to pay like 10 Euros to get it from City hall in her city of birth.

On the other question I have no answer for you other than if anybody can be doing the translation, that person will be held liable for any mistakes in the translation.

Never heard of international birth certificate. I do not think Argentina has them anyway. I ave te usual certf so i need to have it translated.

I am also from SA and hoping to have my interview in London too sometime in December this year (SA00000XXX).

I have translated everything (education cert, birth cert, police cert, etc) from Spanish to English using the University Language Centre of the city in which I am living at. All my friends around here going through immigration processes here in the uk, Canada and Europe have used the same service having positive results. It is kind of dear but there is too much onto risk and don’t want to take any gamble.

That's urban legend, absolutely wrong. You are OK to translate anything yourself. Don't forget to certify the translation, that means, state that you know both languages, date it and sign. No licenses or money needed :)
 
Just called the US embassy in your country and ask them about a certified translating center approved by them ....
 
Best thing is to ask from the KCC or from your local embasssy.

According to the 1st NL , you have to translate all the documents (which are not in English)by a sworn translater. And also should inlcude a statement saying that he is competent of doing such translations and the accuracy about the translation.
 
I don't know if this could help but the USCIS General Tips on Assembling Applications for Mailing website has information regarding the certified translations.

This is what it requires:

Please submit certified translations for all foreign language documents. The translator must certify that s/he is competent to translate and that the translation is accurate.

The certification format should include the certifier's name, signature, address, and date of certification. A suggested format is:

Certification by Translator

I [typed name], certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and ________ languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled ______________________________.

Typed Name

from my experience this is how to do it

I translated my documents alone.

But you will have to add a certification that the translation is correct

Here is the certification:
CERTIFICATION OF COPY AND TRANSLATION
I the undersigned (full name) at (full address inc. country) hereby declare that I am well acquainted with the (language of original document e.g. Spanish) and English languages and that the document attached to this certification marked A1, A2 is a correct translation to English of (short description of the documents e.g. B.Ed. Certificate & Salary Certificate) drawn up in (language of original document) language, which has produced to me originally, and a true photocopy of which attached herewith and marked B1, B2.
In witness whereof I certify that this is to be a true copy of the original documents and a correct translation of the said documents by my signature.
This day Friday, August 21, 2009

Now, simply make a photocopy of the original, then translate it.

Now you have 4 pages:
  1. Original - keep alone
  2. CERTIFICATION OF COPY AND TRANSLATION
  3. translation - Mark every page on upper right corner as A1....A10 then sign beneath any mark.
  4. photocopy.- Mark every page as B1.....B10 + signature

Attach the last 3 papers with a stapler, then add them the original now you have total of 4 documents.

send the 4 documents to the consulate and they will accept it.

Hope this help you or someone else. Save me 1000's....

Thanks for your contribution. I have a question:

1. What do you mean when you say photocopy then translate ,can you expand on that?

My issue is, our marriage certificate has both English and my language, so it's pretty much understandable to an English speaker. However, there are 2 parts that were filled in my language, so we want to just translate the whole document, so that they don't make a big deal out of it.


Any ideas will be appreciated

Use stapler to attach 3 pages: Your certificate of translation, The translation, and The photocopy. attach separately the original.

This way the officers in the consulate can easily see the original and its copy, its translation and your declaration about the translation.

My issue is, our marriage certificate has both English and my language, so it's pretty much understandable to an English speaker. However, there are 2 parts that were filled in my language, so we want to just translate the whole document, so that they don't make a big deal out of it.

Can't tell you exactly what to do although I submitted a page from my bank history where a little part of it where in my language. But Of course the safest way is to translate it all.

Anyway, I think that if it is a critical part of your document e.g. your names, or date of marriage, OR if you don't have much time till the deadline, don't play with it, just translate it all.

Else, send it as is, because there is a robust proof in English about your marriage (names and dates). If they will think that after all you need to translate it all believe me they will return it back to you or call you back.

Of course you need to do your job also and send them an email from time to time and ask them if everything is O.K. with the documents you have send.

I am Sri Lankan who won dv 2010.
and I already submitted my completed documents which were sent by kcc with winning notifications. now I am looking forward until the second notification is received.

I put a one of my relation's name, address with telephone number who is resident in USA as a sponsor for me in those documents which I have already sent to KCC. But now he is going to change his home.
1). Normally does kcc call to this relation to confirm my details?
2). How can I change sponsor's details(address and telephone no)? Because I have already sent the documents to KCC.



3). I need to get my original birth certificate. From where can I get my original birth certificate in Sri Lanka? ( I guess Sri Lankan may help for this)
