Which visa is right for me?

I am an Austrian citizen (born here, have lived here all my life, I have no criminal record and have never overstayed a visa while in the US) who would like to move to the US to be with my American boyfriend. I've contacted the American embassy here, however, the information I've been given has left me slightly confused (I was advised to go to the US on a VWP and look for work while there, then have my future employer file an I-129 petition, but I am worried that the USCIS might not actually like that and I will have problems entering the US in the future).

Which visa/work permit should I go for? I would prefer not to wait months and months for an approval and would rather get started on the whole process right away.

I'd really rather marry for love than for the Green Card (don't get me wrong, I'm madly in love with the guy, but I don't want him to think I'm just doing it for the Green Card). From everything I've read online a temporary work visa seems to be the way to go for me. But are companies really willing to wait for the visa to go through rather than just hiring a US citizen, and if so, how long does it take for an H-visa to go through on average?

ETA: Any information about whether I could run into problems if I looked for work while in the US during the 90-day period I can stay there as a tourist would be awesome.
