Where are you going to move to?

A bit of fun for everyone. Where in the United States are you planning on moving to once you get approved for your Green Card?

For me its the bright lights of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Las Vegas is cool and stuff but,...has very few job opportunities.

In my case, because of my field, probably the midwest although I'll try my luck first in Seattle where I have family. All these plans, if my number gets current and I get my visa,..of course.

Funnily enough when I won in 2003 I went to Las Vegas. It is a bit hard to find work there.

I will look at Austin, TX.

I work in the casino industry so it’s probably the best place for me to be that and the fact that my husband lives there

In this case,...LV is the best place for you, no doubt. Plus great climate and cheap housing.

Seattle,WA. If all goes well. My Parents moved there along with my brother and sister in 1998. as i was over 21 at the time i couldn't go. 20 years later i may get that chance now.

Looking at Raleigh, NC should all things be successful. Looks like such a nice place if a little quiet :)
I'm thinking about moving there too, or some other city in NC. If we get a visa then I would have to do some pretty hard exams to qualify my degree, so I'd probably have to do an activation trip and finish off the exams abroad while working in my home country. What would be the smartest housing option for an activation trip? Alternatively I could pursue to do research in the US, but not sure how easy it would be. Tough choices, but these are just imaginary problems for now :D

How long would your activation trip be? I’m quite a fan of extended stay hotels, like a little apartment but much more flexible than say Airbnb, and usually give breakfast and sometimes evening snacks too.
And what exams would you need to do?

Not sure, depends on a number of factors, it would have to be long enough to get the re-entry permit at least (how long does that take?). Is the extended stay hotel address good for mailing the green card etc.?

Re GC address: It would be ok if you’d be sure that you’d still be there which is difficult because you don’t know how long it’s goong to take, usually a month, but it’s sometimes longer.
Re-entry permit, depends how your fo takes to schedule bios. A few weeks?

We got a discount for a proper extended stay (I can’t remember quite how long that was now) but the nice thing about these is if you need to stay longer it’s usually easy to extend, and if you want to leave earlier than planned a day’s notice usually suffices. Vs an Airbnb where you pay upfront for a fixed time. And vs a normal hotel room you have space, a kitchenette etc. (or it can be bigger, we actually had a largish 2 bed 2 bath apartment with full kitchen!) look up Hyatt house, extended stay America, Marriott residence inn etc.

Thanks for the tips. The exams are the USMLE exams required for physicians to become eligible to apply for residency training.

What is an "Activation trip"? Is that where you enter the country and go back home, and then reenter at a later date? Is that risky? Could do with a holiday in Hawaii....

You have to enter the US within the timeframe that they give you, or else you "lose" your green card. With the stamp on your passport you are allowed to travel for up to a year out-and-in to the US, you can also apply for a re-entry permit that is valid for 2 years if you are absent longer.

Anyone want to share why they are moving to where they are planning to go to? Family? Job? Just because? :)

For me it’s coz my other half is living in Florida :)

I’m moving to Las Vegas because I work in the casino industry and because my husband lives there

I am looking to move the family to a place where the cost of living is actually reasonable. Texas seems reasonable to me? Plus Austin is the most liberal part of the state.

The cost in living in Auckland (NZ) is just criminal. There should be an investigation as to why this was allowed to happen....probably self interest from the politicians.
