When should start Working off-Campus on F1 ?

My wife Joined in University on H4 ( january 2005 ), and later she took I-20 and changed to status from H4 - F1 ( got approved in April first week ).

Now question is, Can F1 student work off-campus ( legally ) for 20 hours ?

Unless you have University authorization and permission from INS no one can work off campus.

working off campus

you can work on campus for 20 hours per week during spring and fall semesters and in summer for 40 hours per week on campus. to be able to work off campus you need to prove dire circumstances and get permission from the university and ins. that too after having been on F1 for some time i think.

After 9 months of being on F1 status, you can apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) which needs to be authorized by the DOA (Your school Intl Dept). W/ a CPT you can work part time for 20 hours/week during regular semesters and upto 40 hours during summer.
