When can I apply for SSN

I change my status from F 2 to H 1 on 26 June 2006.
When is the earliest I can apply for a SSN ?
Can I do this is the second week of June?

if you have I 94 with caveat "H1" or H1 approvals comes with I 94 at the bottom, you can apply next second.

But If your H1 approval says your H1 effective date is Oct 1, 2006 and the SS system shows you are not H1 status, your SSN may take long time before issuance.

But applying earlier is better at any case.

I have entered to the USA with my new H1B at 2nd September. I will start to work at 1st October.

I was at social security office today (5th September) to apply for SSN but they did not accept because of not seeing any data about me on system. Officer said that I have entered to the USA in a short time before any database has not been updated yet and I need to apply 2 weeks later. This was a bit strange but there is no way except waiting now.

Any idea & tip?

Starting work without SSN

I have applied at 12 September and I got a paper which indicates that I have applied for SSN. Officer let me know that it would takes 6-8 weeks to get my new SSN.

Question: I will start to work at 1st October. Do you think there would be any problem to start to work without getting SSN?

As I know my company can not pay my salary without SSN and in my case I think I will get my SSN until end of the October.

Any idea?

SSN application in another state for new H-1B Folks!

Hi BertoltBrecht,

One of my freind who came on H-1B ( New) recently landed for the 1st
time in USA from INDIA.
Can he apply SSN in a different state, than the state where LCA was
originally filed in?
I live in another state , different than his employer's.
The SSA office says, he can apply where ever he lives ,
does not have to be where the employer is.

IF he applies in my state, Is there any delay in getting SSN card??

I really appreciate an earlier reply.

Thanks,
