What travel permit do I apply if I need to stay in home country longer than 6 months?

My mom already has the 10 yr GC. She went back home for 6 months to take care of my grandmother who suffered a stroke. Upon re-entering the US, the officer inquired about her long stay and told her that she needs to apply for a permit if she needs to stay longer back home. She can't remember what the visa is called. Can someone please let us know what it is? Thank you very much!

A Re-Entry Permit allows one to stay out of the country for upto 2 years usually, without losing their permanent residence. Does your mom need to go out for a long time again?

Most likely. My grandmother is not stable and my mom needs to help take care of her. Do you know what form she needs to fill out for this re-entry permit? Thank you!

It's a travel document. She can apply for an expedited one, write a cover letter explaining why, and if she can, include proof of her mother's illness. She will have to stay in the country to do her fingerprinting (the notice will be sent, hopefully, within 2 weeks), after which she can leave and wait for it to be issued. She can ask for it to be sent to her home address, another address in the country, or a US mission abroad. Good luck.

Remember, though, that the time spent abroad will possibly break her continuous residence, so if she wants to apply for naturalisation when she returns, she will have to wait until she qualifies.
