What is wrong with Canada

Social justice? My mother-in-law waits a year for a knee replacement while the Minister of Health gets surgery in a week. 40% of the population cannot find a family doctor. I couldn't find a doctor until I did what Soviet citizens used to do - invoke the name of a relative in the nomeklatura, namely my sister. At that point, bang!

You have MDs and PhDs from all over the world driving cabs and slaving away because they cannot find work. Most of us who can do something productive are taxed to death in favor of unproductive citizens or corporations with political connections.

You had free health care. Canada has it too. It's free, but you wait for months in order to get it.

There's was no homelessness, because they either locked you up or you had parents, grandparents and married children sharing an apartment. In Toronto you have vagrants all through downtown.

You had nice pensions, but you couldn't buy anything with them because the store shelves were always empty.

If you raise a child whose parents do everything for him, independence will be a terrifying concept.

It is ironic you have the name the real Canadian. Shows your patriotism!

......I strong recommend you watching "Good bye Lenin"
I sought the movie about a month ago..I'm telling you it brought back sad memories of how we used to live... Good thing that you mentioned it cuz I was going to get a copy for my father to watch and I had completely forgotten..(I remember back then the poor man saved for I don't know how many years to buy a bike to go to work ..sad,very sad ..I don't wish that life on anyone..)

People have everything here but they are empty inside. When you have a culture of mass consumption and no sense of community, you try to fill the void by going to the mall and buying some materialistic stuff. Our happiness with a car or a pant or even an Ipod lasts few minutes. Last week I received a gift from wife- it was a digital camera I always wanted. After 5 minutes, the joy of receiving it vanished. A culture of mass consumption also yields a generation of wimps in our campuses. When they face the real world, they collapse. We are like bees in a beehive. We have to work and when we die we are replaced. What a way to live your life!

Since when did patriotism involve denying truths about one's country?
Patriotism involves seeing positive things even in the midst of bad things and having a balanced view of one’s country. You only presented an extremely negative one sided view of your country and if I do not know Canada, I would have hated it based on your statements.

This isn't a unique phenomenum unique to Canada. I don't think you should have used the Minister as an example.

What is the free health care Americans have? Anyone who doesn't have job in this country does not have access to healthcare. Or rather you do but at an alarming cost because you have to pay for it 100%. I would rather wait inline months for non-life threatening procedures than not have any healthcare at all. At least in Canada, you can go to the emergency room and not have to worry about those massive bills.

In Toronto you have vagrants all through downtown.

Again..not unique to Toronto. Come to Washington Dc and I'll show you some vagabonds.

I really like Canada, because I believe what they are trying to achieve is what every nation should strive to do: giving their citizens the best. Yes, jobs are tough, taxes are higher, etc... but did you ever stop to think of the numbers? By this I mean the fact that the USA has over 300 million people versus slightly over 31 million in Canada. Thats almost 10 USA income generators to 1 Canadian income generator! It would make more sense for the USA to have free healthcare and Canadians to pay for it.

I am very impressed with countries such as Canada, Switzerland, Australia, etc that have fewer than 35 million citizens and still manage to maintain an standard of living - often higher - if not comparable to the USA.

Now don't get me wrong, I love the USA...I am just not quick to declare it the best place to live. Overgeneralizations are very dangerous and should be avoided.

Well said. I am also grateful for living in America, but I also acknowledge that corporate greed rules this country. I also acknowledge that the poor are screwed in this country!
